Looking for a new headset, would like opinions.

I was looking for some advice on a new headset and was wondering what you guys would recommend.
First off I am using an Asus Xonar Essence STX and would prefer that it is compatible with that, I want to avoid USB headsets since they seem to not even use my soundcard.
Second, I already own the Logitech G930's and I hate them, had nothing but issues with them since day 1.

Third, (and most likely the most skeptical of my requirements) is I would like to get a good, all around headset. I play games in surround, I watch bluray movies in surround and I am listening to music when doing homework and all other non gaming and movie watching things on my computer. So something that can be good with everything is preferred.

Fourth, It would be nice if it could work with PS3 as well but if the overall quality is superb and does not work with PS3 that is fine, I can compromise.
And finally, price is not really a huge issue, I cam comfortably go up to $300 and with some hesitation go over..

I am just sick of not having the sound quality match the rest of my rig, it is time for an upgrade and I would like to call upon you fine people to help me out.
Thanks!

I have done some research and the Astro A50's seem nice as long as you don't get the hardware problems that I've heard of some people getting.

I used to have a pair of Astro A40s and while they are decent for console gaming the sound quality just wasn't good enough compared to audiophile quality headphones. If you really want a headset than I would suggest the Sennheiser pc 360s as they are essentially the Sennheiser hd 555s with a boom mic attached.

However, if you want to take advantage of your sound card and have an amazing audio experience I would suggest going with a pair of audiophile headphones and a clip on mic over a headset. It's the difference between headphones and a tin can. You'll discover sounds while listening to music or playing games that you didn't even know were there before.

The headphones I'm currently using with my Titanium HD are the Ultrasone Pro 900s and they put the Astro A40s to shame. The clip on mic I use is the Zalman zm-mic1.

I can get the Astro A50's at Best Buy for $220 with my girlfriends discount. just want to be sure it is the best choice.
Some more advice would be nice, I don't want to get screwed like I did when I got my G930's.

I'd only get the Astro's if you wanted a wireless set and the Mix Amp for your Ps3. The STX already have a surround feature so it'd be worthless for your PC. My favorites for gaming/movies are Sennheiser HD 598 and the AKG K702/Q701. If you're on a budget, the Audio Technica AD700's or the Sennheiser HD 518's are solid choices.

As I stated in the original post, if the headset could work on the PS3 as well that would be a bonus. And I am pretty sure I said that I will be using them for gaming as well so a built in microphone is a must. I chat with friends while playing. Also I want them to be surround sound... People keep suggesting headsets that are neither surround, nor have a mic. Can you guys at least try and read my OP instead of assuming I want something the complete opposite?

You got the sennheiser recommendation. It's really one of the only recommended headsets out there.

For the money, though (and as was suggested), you'll get much better sound and positional audio from a good pair of headphones and just get a cheap clip on mic. Overall the quality will be far superior.

Getting something to also work with your ps3 wouldn't be hard if it's close to your pc, harder but not impossible if it's not.

We are reading what you said, we are trying to help you be happy with your purchase.

We're not recommending gaming headsets because you stated in your op that you were dissatisfied with the audio quality of your rig and wanted it to be "superb." The bottom line is that there are no gaming headsets out there that will offer the audio quality you are looking for.

However, if you are willing to sacrifice audio quality for a built-in mic, like I said in my first post the Sennheiser PC 360 is your best option. No they are not surround, but it seems that you are unaware that neither the Astros nor any other headset out there are surround either. They advertise them as surround because the mix amp utilizes Dolby Headphone, something your Asus Xonar Essence STX can do too. When it comes to headphones it's software like Dolby Headphone and X-Fi CMS-3D that simulate surround sound, not the hardware.

As far as PS3 compatibility goes, you can get an Astro mixamp or a Creative Soundblaster Recon 3D to use with the Sennheisers for console gaming. That way, for pc gaming you'll have your Xonar Essence STX to provide the "surround sound," and the Astro mixamp/Recon 3D to provide it for your PS3.

A pair of Sennheiser PC 360s and either of the amps for console gaming will cost around $350, so a little over your budget but it really is the best option in terms of audio quality if you insist on having a built-in mic.
