Indeed. Generally, Kepler isn't as strong at compute as Fermi is, but Kepler does show better CUDA specific performance in some apps. Fermi just embarrasses Kepler in OpenCL/OpenGL tasks. The main reason I have this hot power hungry monster sitting in my rig is because it computes like a boss at Sony Vegas Pro 12 which loves Fermi backwards and forwards.

It depends...

Fermi's cores are stronger for computing than Kepler, but Kepler has way more cores.

If you want computing power get a proper card, not a consumer gaming gpu.

Not for me sir. The GTX 480 does it's job well in GPU accelerated rendering.

It all depends on the application.

The much smaller 5870 eats the 480 for lunch in some brute force applications. The 680 beats Fermi based teslas in some compute applications, and the 7970 potentially eat both for breakfast.

It's all about how the program is coded. If you need the professional drivers/features, they're more than worth the price premium. In other applications, "consumer" silicon will work just as well.

I about 99% sure that SLi does not 'work' for compute tasks. And it's likely only some apps would be able to use both GPU's simultaneously, even with them operating independently (SLi disabled) ... in fact I'd guess that a lot of them probably can't, and thus your extra GPU(s) would be sitting idle when using such apps. Although maybe if you can run multiple instances, and the application has the ability to choose which GPU to use ... then maybe.

Just some things to consider ... I would do your research on some sites that specialize in this sort of thing ... tbh the vast majority of OCN'ers use their gpus primarily for gaming thumb.gif
