Recommend me a 7900 series

So, I've got a 7950 Vapor-X. It's a coil whiner...and it's not just during games, it's almost always chirping. Games just seem to intensify it. High fps makes it much, much worse, but even BC2 last night WITH vsync on caused an audible high pitch that was louder than my system fans.

Anyway, Sapphire/Newegg will let me return it.

What do I replace it with?

On one hand, the PCB on the new Vapor-X 7950's is a 7970pcb, with 2x8 pin power connectors and power handling for a 7970. But is there a better option? I like how quiet the Vapor-X can be, while still keeping temperatures ridiculously low.

Or should I just spend more and consider a 7970? The Black Edition XFX is only $370 after MIR, and comes with Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite. But do I need a 7970 to drive a single 1080p monitor? Guess it could be decent future proofing.

Anyway, I need help. I will OC whatever I get, so I'd like to take that into consideration. Seems it's a gamble though, unless anyone knows of cards with a very positive track record in this regard? I've tried to get info, but seems even between review samples, cards will have a 100mhz OC difference.

Also have to keep in mind I'm putting this in a SG08, and I already had to bend the case a bit for the Vapor-X. So, no 3-slot coolers.

Just get a new Vapor-X. Sapphire makes good products, even though you got a poor example. It is hard to justify the additional expense going from a 7950 to a 7970, as they perform so close to each other.

It's too bad you got one with such bad coil whine. Hopefully your next one is better! thumb.gif

Going to RMA mine for the same reason as soon as someone gets them back in stock (which is hopefully before my 30 days is up).

There are no 7950 Vapor X with a reference 7970 pcb. They are built on a custom pcb.

I know, it's still a 7970 board design even if it isn't a reference design. I managed to order a new Vapor-X when they came in stock on Newegg for a split second. Just keep refreshing that page!
