Errors at XMP/1866

Thread Starter
I've recently started getting BSODs which are pointing toward memory issues. the most recent one was " Attempted to write to a readonly memory". I'm also getting ntoskrnl.exe errors. upon research, some poeple have found that memory corruption is usually the issue. running Memtest86 was suggested, and thats exactly what I did.

Now here is where things get strange. I ran the test twice. Once at stock settings, 3570k at stock and my Patriot Viper 6 1866 at what is read in the BIOS without having to set anything, which is 1333 and another time I set it to my 24/7 settings, 3570k at 4.5-1.245v and memory at XMp 9-11-9-27-t1 1.65v. At stock I can complete the test with no errors but at its rated 1866 I start to get errors at 66% into the test ( random numbers). I shut the test off at 50k errors, yes 50k..and it was still climbing.

Do I have an issue with the modules itself or could the CPUs memory controller be at fault? I don't mind lowering the Frequency but if I buy RAM thats rated at 1866 I'd expect to be able to run it at that.

Apologies for not having a sig, If you'd like to see my specs feel free to go to my profile. I still haven't figured out how to put my sig at the bottom of my posts, lol. Been a member for 2-3yrs and still don't know..... tongue.gif

I'm not sure what I'm asking when it comes to my issue. I guess I'm wondering if that, even though you have issues in Memtest86, is it still possible to use your system like the way I do, As in gaming, surfing and watching movies? Wouldn't having bad memory cause your comp to not start or can it also cause random BSODs and program terminations, yet still be able to boot into your OS? I guess I'm hoping that it's something else and not a hardware issue. If I continue using this memory, dealing with BSODs, could the memory corruption cause long term damage to my other components? Like a bad PSU frying HDDs etc?

If I do have to get new memory are there any suggestions. I enjoy OCing, gaming, video editing, but I mostly game. I would prefer 1866 and above. Currently I am looking at the Avexir Core Series RAM.

well I cannot say much about the issue you are having, you may need to tweek some settings with voltage to see if that is causing the instability with the ram.

As far as Bad ram still working? Sure, i had a system that after 4 hours of heavy gaming , like clock work would make me reboot the system biggrin.gif

but it worked otherwise just fine, I forget what the real issue was, it was old ram too.

I've raised my voltages to 1.69 still getting crashes after a little bit. Should I try messing with timings?

yah but your platform I dont know very well, is that safe voltage?

loosen the timings a bit, I doubt they are overheating but maybe direct some air to them just to help out

The Patriots run at a higher voltage at XMP but should work. Some people go higher on the DRAM voltage but my personal limit is 1.6v for Ivy.

Official Intel spec is lower. I believe it's 1.575 but you should double verify.

I would test each stick at stock than XMP settings one at a time to see if you have any bad sticks. If you do, RMA or buy a new set.

How long are you testing the RAM?

I suggest you run memtest with stock settings. I've seen iffy OC's throw memtest errors. Just use stock settings and XMP for RAM.

What stress tests have you done after you setup the system?

Good luck! Hoping it's a setting issue and not bad RAM.

The ram at default should run at 1.5v, personally would check stock stability and manually overclock to a voltage you feel comfortable at.

Not sure if it's more widespread but I had ram compatibility issues with the Z77/X79 upgrades I did for family. Usually don't have much faith in the QVL lists but for Z77/X79 I would definitely take a look.
