i have 290 dollars on upgrades - Page 3

Your motherboard only supports SATA2. Attaching a SATA3 SSD to it would bottleneck its performance. Sure itll be faster than your standard HDD, but it will not be working to its full potential. Youd lose around 200mb/sec by running it on your motherboard.

Id wait on the SSD until you had a SATA3 MB.

Are you sure the fastest SSD's usually hit about 555MBs so a sata 1 ports should suffice.... or am I missing something. I dont even think a SSD is a worth while investment.

No, you can get an SSD- Itll just work at a slightly slower speed than it could on a SATA 3 port. SATA2 has a 300mb/s transfer rate. SATA3 is 600mb/s. Most if not all SSDs are in the 500s now AFAIK. 300mb/s is nothing to sneeze at though.

SATA1 1.5gbit/sec is 150mb/sec
SATA2 3gbit/sec is 300mb/sec
SATA3 6gbit/sec is 600mb/sec.

The difference is gigabits/second and gigabytes/second. If they actually transferred 6gb/sec. wheee.gif

Not a bad idea to just keep saving money and plan a nice new build. thumb.gif

Depends on how badly you want to upgrade. Even the current CPUs will be a monstrous improvement. Steamroller is probably mid 2014. Thats a loooooong time to wait. I waited maybe 2 months to see the 660Ti before I bought my 7950 and it drove me crazy. Waiting sucks.

If you gonna wait for steamroller dont get your hopes to high given AMDs trackrecord. Also then you may wana wait for the initial price to go down. Then you might wana wait for AMDozer. Then you might wana wait for .... then....

It all depends what you use your PC for if its gaming the current vishera or ivy builds do it up rather nicely, its all up to you.
