Bringing an Old rig back to life Phenom 9750.

Hello, I am new to this forum as a poster but have surfed it for years, I have been rebuilding an older rig I had as a backup/guest computer, and have spent much time overclocking it and upgrading some components to make it faster and work with modern games, I bought a new motherboard and PSU for it, and installed two Radeon HD5670's that I had laying in the way-side.. I am wondering if you guys think I have reached the limit or not,

Biostar TA790+ 128m
REF: 250
HTlink: 2250(1800stock)
Samsung PC2-6400:(8gb) 500Mhz (400stock)
CoreVoltage: 1.312v (1.23stock)
Phenom X4 9750 2.4ghz x12Mult: 3.0ghz
Stock Heatsink/fan with load tempts 17c idle, 48-52load.

I have Run Overdrive Stability test, and Prime 95, each for over an hour with no issues, Played Battlefield 3 for 6+hours fine, And Planetside 2 for many hours with no issues, I have been stable also at 3.12ghz, BUt with 3.15ghz being the crash point even with HT, and Dram values reduced, And no improvement of further over voltage I have left it at 3ghz, I have found mixed reports of the limit of this CPU and am wondering if anyone has some ideas of possible getting 3.2ghz stable... Thanks and I am excited to make this post ^_^

The first generation phenoms weren't known to be great overclockers.

unless your running windows XP I doubt it would go higher.

I have a phenom 9850 that wouldn't pass 2.8ghz in 64 bit vista.

Well in that case, I feel very fortunate to get 3.0 smile.gif

I still have a Phenom 9xxx floating around here somewhere. It never liked being over clocked. Best bet is to get it some good ram and a SSD OS drive and set it up as a simple terminal and it should do fine. Asking for too much performance out of it would be rude. Those chips were not that amazing. However if you are looking for a bit more headroom they have had a few different AM3s on sale recently that work pretty well on AM2+ boards and you should be able to get a good deal past 3.0ghz... think 955, 965 or 1045t 1055t.

Drop your HT Link down to 1800 or below, and give it some more juice. A lot of Phenom I's crap out past 3GHz though. They disappointed me more than bulldozer fx.

The good news is that they do tend to undervolt very well if you want to make a green machine.

It would seem Damric you didn't read my post as I had stated I have tried dropping the HT and cranking up the V's, and as for Fooliobass This is a backup rig, Not my main computer.. This is for guests to play with when they visit for some good old LAN-Time fun. Already got more then I expected, But a little more would do Wonders in Planetside2 as it is incredibly CPU heavy.

If it were me, I wouldn't bother with that CPU, and I'd grab a Phenom II X4 (or even Athlon II X4) for that board while they're still cheap. All of the X6's (except for the 1045T) have skyrocketed in price since going out of production, and I can't imagine that the X4's are that far behind.

That would make for a nice 'secondary' rig for some time to come.

I have a Phenom II 965 in my main rig, I would really like a 1100T for it and then I'd think about moving the 965 into the rig listed above, But again the rig is meant to be build cheap, and the whole intent was to use the RAM and CPU I already had, as I do not intend to replace it, rather make it useable.. But as for its current performance, It is really beasting at 3.0ghz.for a 9750. I'll just write it off at the best I'm gunna get outa the current hardware. The 5670's cannot really preform any better even if I had a better cpu under them.
