It allows you to add a third monitor for eyefinity, or if you have a FLEX card, 4 monitors on one video card. I just bought this and tested to see that it works. I'm fine with three monitors, it turns out. My loss, your gain

Keep in mind it's DVI-D, so you can't use a DVI -> VGA adapter.
