Anyone miss the Unreal Tournament games?

not sure about all of you, but some of my earliest gaming memories were playing UT99 to the wee hours of the morning. (UT99 STILL has the best server browser ever)

UT 2003 and 2004 were great games also, but Unreal Tournament 3 just didn't work out. Graphically it was great, but man the controls and feel of the game was pretty bad. (Not to mention the horrible UI it shipped with!) Cross platform development anyone?

When Unreal engine 4 was announced along with a PC exclusive title I was really hoping for a PC only UT on the new engine, but oh well....Fortnite might end up being really cool too.

Which was the map with the two towers each with a flag and they each had a redeemer which spawned on the sniping balcony?
That map was amazing.

UT99 was probably the best game I have ever played. Low grav instagib. I played on 5v5 and 2v2 Ladders on IGL. I miss those days. The community was so much better than the communities in today's games.

All 3 of them are still played competitively.

UT99 is most popular, followed by 2k4 and UT3. There is a 1v1 tournament in UT3 for cash prizes in March.

I've long come to terms with that never happening.

In general, people are not interested in games that do not offer immediate gratification. COD/Halo sort of cemented this by spawning people with weapons and regenerating health - certain gametypes in UT3 cater to this and are often looked down upon by the 1v1/TDM community. Unreal is incredibly unforgiving and requires ludicrous amounts of practice to play well... If someone were to start learning UT3 now, it would literally be weeks before they could get a single kill versus a half decent player.
