I love UT, but part of me resents the way it took all the focus away from Unreal. Unreal is surely the best game ever made. I sometimes wish they'd released UT as the 'Botpack' expansion for Unreal that it was originally intended to be.

...although that probably wouldn't have helped - just look at COD4: Amazing SP campaign and poor MP, but all anyone cares about is the MP. Not that I'm suggesting UT is a poor MP game of course!

Yeah , I really miss these kind of arena shooters. They used to be so popular and it feels as though they disappeared overnight.

Since there are still plenty of people playing games like Quake live, there must still be a market. I suspect that the problem is that money is in consoles. So developers making large scale FPS with big budgets will make games that will do well on both consoles and PC. Twitch shooters is not really a genre that works on console. Blizzard often gets a lot of crap from gamers for all the ways in which they "fail" in their eyes. However, it is companies like Blizzard that make the most worthwhile PC games that do not have to conform to console criteria.

We could really use a company like Blizzard on the FPS market, and maybe they could do for arena shooters like what they did for RTS with Starcraft 2. Luckily we have Valve though, and games like Team Fortress 2 and COunter Strike: Global Offensive are both great and fairly popular.

They could have made it work. That is the beauty of Unreal is they could have kept it modern and still not lost its roots.

What do you mean?

UT3 was actually a pretty impressive effort on EPIC's part to bring the series back to it's roots, and I think that was part of the reason it failed. UT3 shifted away from the floaty, hitscan centric gameplay that became the norm during UT2004's reign, back to the frantic, toe-to-toe carnage of the original Unreal Tournament. There was always lots of clamoring for a 'return to roots' prior to UT3, but when it actually happened I think it may have been too much of a drastic change from the UT2004 style gameplay that everyone had grown used to.

Another thing that didn't help was the way EPIC pulled a 'Bethesda', and released the game in a beta state. Unlike Bethesda, EPIC did eventually patch the game to the point where it was finished, but I think by then it was too late and the damage was done.

What irritated me especially, was all the hollow promises surrounding UT3's development. The game was going to have seamless loading of massive warfare maps, highly interactive bots with sophisticated voice recognition and things like that which never materialized. Even in the PR screenshots they used super high quality actors, and then excluded them from the actual game.

This thread brings back happy memories fromt he days you either played CS or Unreal. Sure CS had the upper hand: Easier to get in to, slower, weapons that all behaved in a similar way.
But UT was where the fun was at. It took everything from the current state of the genre, but it in a Mogwai and fed it after dark. CS was sort of the opposite.
I was never very good, but then again it took some real skill to handle the shock rifles only game mode.

There were some cool things about UT3 I thought were nice additions, (alternate fire mode for the bio-rifle which was the big glob that would stick to an enemy, removal of lightning gun etc) but I agree with the poster above...at launch it was buggy and the men\selection screen was obviously made for consoles. Yes, they DID fix these things, but by then people were happy in the pants over CoD.
