[Hexus] Dell updates flagship Ultrasharp monitor range - Page 4

I look forward to hearing a comparison on the Samsung PLS vs the Dell IPS!

I'll be honest, the fact that the U2713H has BG LED Backlight really gives a tech-boner, especially having owned a number of displays with RGB LED Backlighting and Local-Dimming, as it really does allow for an incredible contrast ratio while giving significantly better colors. Combined with a true 10bit panel and 14bit LUT, not to mention the reduced AG Coating, it seems like it would be one of the most beautiful monitors, period!
But then reality strikes and reminds me that unless you have TRUE 10BIT EVERYTHING, you just end up with an expensive monitor and over-saturated colors :/

The Samsung monitors have piqued my interest as of late, specifically because of the glossy (or "not-grainy") display, the reports of excellent response times/input lag, and the fact that PLS is advancing as a screen tech significantly.
The S27B970D in particular is a beautiful display, and as much as I like the rather Utilitarian aesthetics of the Dell Ultrasharp line, I must say that I am now favoring the more modern, minimalistic look of the Samsung displays.

I think you have way too much confidence in Dell. Yes, they are a multi-billion dollar company. That does not mean they are always right or can predict what the market wants accurately.

Why won't anyone do that? frown.gif

And yes I am aware of the Korean monitors, but I want a proper brand with guarantee next time.

This.

OLED or Plasma monitors? I know OLED might be here in the upcoming years but plasma could be sort of neat.

U2413 is a better panel and has more inputs. That being said, the U2412M is a great panel. I have two of them, and the color on them is simply stunning.

The U2413 probably smokes the U2412M in every aspect. You would think since it is double the price. Don't get me wrong. I am very happy with my U2412M. But, had I known about the U2413. I might have waited it out a bit for a good deal and got it. Oh well I am stuck with it now and cant send it back.

I'm using the second (or is it third gen) U2711 and love it. Definately would go for the U2713 higher res and such should this one die. The 30 is so tempting but the price differnce...eh, not sure about it. I'd have to retool my hardcase and wonder if it'd also fit on my desk anyway.

The new PLS panels in the Samsung are getting insanely good reviews, most are claiming better than IPS, and I don't see the new dell monitors having the same quality for gaming and day to day tasks. These dells are 10bit monitors, which add a ton to the cost and give 0 benefits to gamers and your average user.

Dell also has had very mixed results lately with it's monitors, mainly due to their anti-gloss coatings and bad QC. The Samsung is glossy, they factory calibrate it and give you a calibration paper in the box, and Samsung apparently has been requiring a much higher standard for backlight bleeding and uniformity on their 970Ds. It's virtually none, and I can't say the same for any of the current Dell monitors, they are extreme hit or miss in that department.

I'm still waiting on a review of the 970 at Prad.de. Their review of the lower tier 850 left me unimpressed and the TFTCentral review showed the 970 having a better response time but similar to LG's offerings in every other aspect. Seems the updated SB971 should be released soon in Europe so it will be interesting to see what they updated.

TFTCentral just pushed out the U2413 review yesterday. I wouldn't say the U2412M gets smoked, there are image quality enhancements and features one would expect for a monitor for over double the price. The 12M has a slightly better response time and about the same lag.

Since the U2413 is a true replacement to the U2410 it will probably have about the same price drops. It was common for the U2410 to be around $500 with occasional drops to $450.

U2913WM @ 75Hz is hot. biggrin.gif I can't ever go back to 16:9 now, so claustrophobia inducing.

As for 120Hz 1440p, only DP 1.2 has the guaranteed bandwidth to support it, and that's still a bit iffy...

1920x1080 120Hz: 285.55MHz pixel clock
2560x1440 120Hz: 497.76MHz pixel clock

DisplayPort 1.1 is limited to 270MHz pixel clock, supposedly DP 1.2 can go up to 540MHz, but I didn't have any luck with it.

HDMI 1.4 is limited to 340MHz. HDMI 2.0 should go up to around 600MHz.

Dual Link DVI is a guaranteed 330MHz, and past that it is only limited by the quality of the cable and its length. As well it needs a source that can output ~500MHz for 2560x1440 120Hz.

As for whether the 120hz Catleap 1440p's are actually hitting 120Hz over Dual Link DVI, there's some weirdness going on there, with some people having to wait for the their cables to warm up before they can get the full 120Hz.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1232084/yamakasi-catleap-q270-100hz-guaranteed/1000_50 for all sorts of interesting discussion.

I've been looking at the Asus PB278Q myself, apparently it's a pls as well but with a much more attractive price then the samsung 970D. Throw in it's wide range of input options, three year warranty, and multi-adjust it has i'm just about sold.
