[Hexus] Dell updates flagship Ultrasharp monitor range - Page 6

You do realize having 1 bad product doesn't mean their entire range is bad? If you'd gotten a new U3011 you'd probably be fine now. (Also, iirc most 30" and 27" IPS screens use the same panels anyway.)

Yes, I know that, I used to be into monitor/television repair, and the screen itself was fine, it was the DG board that was messed up (this is sourced by Dell, not LG). This was the first time I had seen such a defect on a Ultrasharp, let alone such a high end model. The point is, I had the latest revision, as well as a late Dec build date. Since this screen is calibrated from the factory, the margin for error is extremely small for such a defect on this class of monitor. You would have thought the tech doing the calibration would have noticed that half of the screen was not working

A day later it got even worse

Here is the calibration note from the factory

I'm not saying they are bad monitors. They make some of the best, and if I can't find a suitable replacement, I'll grab another U3011, possibly used this time. All my other Dell monitors has been stellar, and I love my perfect U2311H. I was just saying that as of late their quality control seems a bit lax from what it used to be.

Perhaps the defect was a result of stress from UPS/FedEX/USPS/ect...

Displays are always a "risky" purchase.

Therefore, try to buy at a place with good return policy, if you spot something you don't like right away. Especially things which are in the "grey zone" like IPS glow, backlight bleeding, buzzing and such.

I got 3 perfect HP ZR30w without a single defect. Not a single hot/dead pixel. I was surprised. And good uniformity all over the 3 monitors.

And after a good calibration/profiling with my i1 Pro, those monitors are totally unbeleivable. The difference with the before and after is night and day. More 3D like, better colors, everything now looks so good for gaming and photo/video editing. Can't beleive the difference.

People should ALWAYS calibrate/profile a 30''.

A chip board is far tougher than a screen. The amount of force needed to dislodge or damage one far exceeds the force needed to bust a screen. For reference I dropped a 60 inch plasma onto a concrete floor (it was written off and had to be destroyed) and the screen shattered, but all the boards worked. All boards have two way to defect: From Extreme heat to extreme cold and error from the factory.

There is also the fact that Dell already knew about the problem when I contacted them. Most likely a small batch of bad monitors and I was unlucky enough to get one.

This is a very good way to go. It;s always better to eyeball a monitor because one from the same batch can look totally different.

I love mine, but according to uniformity and black level the Dell was no slouch
