Odds of getting a good overclocker are lower than with the Lightning. So, there's no reason you couldn't get this L version and have it blow away a regular Lightning. It's just that you have a better shot at a good one with a Lightning, rather than the L.

Nice try Frank. So when a company doesn't have to lower prices to keep sales up / remain competitive, that somehow paints them in a negative light? rolleyes.gif

Don't see the point.

They release higher and higher clocked HD 7970s and then lower GTX 680s? Lol. Nice one.

Since everyone is still confused:

Lightning L is lower clockspeeds.
All cards we sell, we have to "warranty" them for period of warranty period, and shipped clock speeds are based on what we are confident we can warranty.
Higher shipped clock speed = "binned" better at the factory.
OVERCLOCKING IS NOT GUARANTEED.
Your chances of a higher overclock is BETTER with a card binned higher, versus one that is binned lower.

In the case of this "pointless" card, the point is, there's more PCB and plates and thermals than there are chips. So..... why not put a lower clocked GPU on there, ship it with a lower clock speed, and change the name accordingly?

Pointless? You, as a product manager for a product sold globally in different regions, would end up doing the same to move inventory. That's what 99% of the inventory at Costco is like, product that is old stock from other places, and/or not meeting "retail shelf quality".

There's a reason why it's so cheap. Costco oatmeal SUCKS compared to what you can buy at the best supermarket out there, after you make oatmeal. But it's from the same factory...

Cool. Well how about the regular Lightnings? Any chance we will see a price drop with them anytime soon?

Seems like they're just trying to sell off stock.

so much flame. a lower binned chip with a great cooler and power system not to mention a bios flash away from being ACTUALLY over-voltable...

sounds like a good deal to me.

still, msi killed it with the original 680 lightning, the fastest consumer gpu overall in the world. hitting 1.5ghz was just amazing to see them get out of that chip, 1.6ghz+ on water and 1.8ghz world record, ahhhmazing

To echo a previous comment, there already exists a 680 Power Edition that is a step away from being a Lightning for $40-$60 cheaper. It clocks a little lower, but otherwise appears to be every bit the same card, even bearing the "Lightning' moniker on the PCB. The "poor man's Lightning", (if you can call $450 poor)has actually been out for some time.

the clocks look to be the same on the lightning L as the power edition. so this might be japans power edition. as the article does say its to be released in japan.
