I have the HD 558s which are the step down from the 598s and I really enjoy them. Before I bought them I was by no means an audiophile, but no longer can I get myself to listen to anything other than these. When you switch from using them for a while to something cheaper like a stereo or TV / monitor speakers, it just doesnt sound good at all, so I just dont use them anymore.

I primarily use mine for 90% gaming and 10% music / movies and both sound great. When gaming, these make it so easy to spot enemy players from any direction. When watching movies if you close your eyes, you feel as if your actually standing there inside the movie scene.

I went with the 558 over the 598 because of recomendations from people who owned both. They said there is slight sound range improvement, but not big enough to justify the cost even though I didn't have a set budget. Plus the euro car interrior design wasn't very appealing to me.

The plastic of these headphones doesn't seem cheap either so I wouldent worry about that. I would think the 598 use the same plastic but white.

I feel the same way about electrostatic headphones. After hearing the Sr-009 and 007s and the sennheiser HE-09s everything sounds like crap.

I can tell you for a fact though, those who rant and rave about how good the 598s are, are the same people who have gotten used to the sound signature.

Really, sennheiser stuff is so over priced it isn't even funny. Alessandro, AKG, Audio technica, Hifiman, stax, Audeeze, and beyerdynamic are all better IMO.

Hell yes I would.

I've tested the previous iteration of them, both. The 555s (which I own) and the 595s (which I tested prior to deciding the 555s and concluding that €200 more wasn't worth it). The 558s fix the 555s weaknesses, that is, giving bass a bit more of power while mantaining clarity, and smoothening a bit the mid end.

If only the 598s are as good as the 595s, which I do not even doubt in the slightest, they are magnific headphones.

I have the 598's they are my go to headphones for anything vocal or jazzy, they are also very good for dance music and are in general a very good all rounder smile.gif
Their strongest points are vocals (especially female) soundstage and they have plenty of detail. The treble is a little bright, but far more comfortable than the akg 702 (which i also own) though the 702's do have a slight edge in detail, overall i prefere the 598's sound. they are also extremely comfortable and very well made, don't let the plastic fool you, these are of to build quality, much better than the 595's i used to own.
These also do very well for movies and are as good as any open headphone can be for gaming, above average.
IMHO excellent value for money.
Oh and they look great too smile.gif

Here's how it is, if you're going to spend $200+ for a HD598... I'd suggest you get a Beyerdynamics DT770Pro instead (for a closed headphone, DT770 isn't bad at all for positioning accuracy).
If you're all about positional accuracy among all else, then Audio Technica ATH AD900x. It's about $70 more expensive on Amazon, maybe if you can find a better deal elsewhere then go for it.

Otherwise, for the best trade-off between the 2 middle ground would be a HD558. You could get it for $150 and I think that's a pretty decent price.

I know some are going to recommend you the ATH-AD700, but a word of caution (as I've told many)... the headband design may or may not bother you. For me, it was so uncomfortable that no matter how good it sounded, it was just useless to me. Trust me, it's a big deal. If you can't keep em' on, there's no use how good a headphone sounds.

so you would recommend the ath ad900x, and those are open? i want open headphones.

for a little more expandability, can you give me a recommendation for $400 ones that are still available at best buy, and if so, ones that are better not there

thanks

I can't find the 598s on Best Buy's website (I'm assuming gift cards and/or employee discount is the reason you want to buy from them?), but basing my estimates on the Amazon price, here are a couple of others that I've seen recommended in a similar price range:

Audio Technica ATH-A700X
Beyerdynamic DT770-Pro 250
Audio Technica ATH-A900 (A bit more, but still highly recommended)
Creative Aurvana Live Cheaper, but essentially a Denon AH-D1001
Logitech UE-6000 review

Don't know if any of those fit the bill for you, but there are some options looking at the Beest Buy website.
