would you recommend sennheiser hs598's? - Page 3

I only use hifi amps and mixing desks so i cant comment on a good standalone headphone amp.
Havent heard the ad900x but the k702 is better than the ad900.
With your current setup i really think you'll be much better off with the hd598 because the akg's are very hard to drive, more expenssive and will need a stronger amp, you'll end up having to pay out an extra $150-250 in total. I personally find the 598's more pleasing anyway. IMO theres no need to go higher than the 598 anyway unless your a true audiophile or using them for strict studio monitoring, and tbh the 598's are so clear, detailed and neutralish that they can be used for studio work easilly.
So unless it turns out that the ad900x are clearly better than the 598 at a similar price, or if you really feel the need to spend out on an expensive heaphone amp/small mixing desk for the k702, you should just settle on the hd598, i highly doubt you'll regret it smile.gif

ok, hmmmmmmmmmmm, if i can i will go with the k702 or q 701, what are the differences? i read no dif in sound quality, what are the differences? they are 244 for the q701 and 263 for the k702, what is the extra $20 going for? and since these headphones require a lot of power, can my sound card run them smoothly?

anyway, i like going extreme biggrin.gif

Actually it doesn't have a built in amp. It won't power a q701.

I honestly think that the HD598 is miles ahead of the AD700. From what I've heard the AD900 isn't that different than the AD700.

I'm a big fan of my 250 ohm DT990. Now that honestly is a step up from the HD598 to me.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a headphone.

ok, i want slightly booming bass and crisp mids and highs, i can also use some equalizers on my sound card? the dt 990's look nice, if i got any they would be the 600 ohm version rolleyes.gif out of those headphones which ones are the best? in guessing the dt 990's because they are more but price tags are 'not always important' with audio in some cases.

and since they seem to require a lot of power what amp would you say i should get? also would a maybe need a DAC or not?

judging by what you're saying, i'm thinking you want a true audiophile experience?
iF you're looking for strong bass, forget the AKG's and audio technica's.

the hd598 has a slightly north of nuetral bass but this is offset by the forward upper mid/lower trebble, i still think you'll like them though.

as for amps, you don't NEED a dac with your soundcard, it already has a good dac and a stereo line out.

you could get any of these amps:
musical fidelity V-can 2 (AMP)
pro-ject headbox MK2 (AMP, V-can is better)
Teac UD-H01 (DAC/AMP)
Teac HA-501 (AMP)
asus xonar essence one (DAC/AMP)

or this small mixing desk would be a little cheaper and be just as good:
Yamaha MG10/2 (no DAC, set the 2 channels you're using to 0db, all other inputs/channels to min, and use it's headphone socket)

i'm not possitive any of the above will power the DT990 600ohm to there best though, they are extremely hard to drive to there best.
if you get an amp, get the beyerdynamic DT990 premium 250ohm instead.

or just get even better headphones at a higher price, that don't require a dedicated amp, ie:
sennheiser HD700 = shure SRH1840 > shure SRH1440

or save loads of money and get the either HD598 or beyerdynamic DT990 80ohm (normal or pro, pro is slightly better build and tighter fit, which can help bass)

any of the above will give you great sound, just choose how much you want to spend?

ok, thanks for the info. so if i get an amp, the dt990 250 ohm, otherwise cheap the hd598's or high end the hd 700's, in between how about the hd 600 or 650's?

but if i wanted the ultimate experience and can find a really powerful amp, i could get the dt990 600 ohms?

Ok hold the phone.

@true frog: To start with the K701/K702/Q701s are all slightly different headphones. The K701s and the Q701s are the closest, but the Q701s have a bit more bass and the sound a bit warmer. The K702s have tighter bass, and they are better for dubstep out of the three. I personally like and own the Q701s.

But here is the big issue with AKG headphones. You NEED a dedicated amp. I had the stx sound card from asus, and had it all set up with better op amps and everything else, and friend of mine just finished the prototype to a tube headphone amp. Believe it or not, the tube amp is much more revealing than the stx. I hear more details and the sound is much richer and warmer. That is great and all, but the prototype alone was three hundred bucks and the final amp is about 500. The AKG stuff LOVES high end gear, and if you don't have it, they sound like crap.

The hifiman He-04 mehhhhhhhh I really don't like the sound signature. Some people do not notice it what so all and think they are the greatest headphones in the world, to me they seem to sound like they have an echo.

The Ad900x is sort of a goldy locks headphone. It does have warmth and life which the 598s do not. They do sound better with higher end audio systems, but you can still reasonably listen to them with a MP3 player. and they are pretty light and comfy to boot.

As for amp. I would look at the O2 Amp from these guys http://www.mayflowerelectronics.com/standard-headphone-amps.html They try and make it as cheap as possible without sacrificing any SQ.

OK. The DT990 is going to have better bass. HOWEVER, it does not have that great of a sound stage.

Another thing. If you are going to go stupid high end audio like 600+. Then either get stax headphones with the right amp off ebay/head-fi/kaboten, or skip headphones all together and go straight to speakers. Good speakers will beat the worlds best headphones.

If you want to be private, stax. If you want premium sound quality, speakers such as celestions.

DO NOT GET SENNHEISER PERIOD!!!. They are generally bass light, and the HD600/700/and 800s do not have as good of bass as the Hifimans do or even the DT 990 (when properly amped). They are all completely lifeless, and anemic sounding.

If you are going to get normal headphones, then get either the Q701s and buy a proper tube amplifier that can double as a headphone and a speaker amp (which will probably be good since I think I remember you saying something about buying speakers later on down the road) or get the O2 amp and the AD900X thumb.gif

Ok i may be mistaken so i'll take your word for it, i was under the impression that the q701 was upgraded to k702 specs after the release of the later, anyway no biggy.

To op, what headphones are you using atm?
Theres no point going too high end unless you are already used to high end gear.

Im really not sure what amps can power 600ohm headphone, but the amp needs to be powerfull and of high quality or theres no point in getting good phones.

Sennheisers are bass nuetral and bang for buck i feel they generally offer the best value, thats just my opinion though.

the hd650 is better than the hd600 in terms of clarity, they are a little valed at the top end however they will have the bass you're looking for, you'll probably like them alot, but you'll need an amp and they're a bit of a love hate kind of headphone, so they're not without risk

if you can i suggest you visit some shops to audition some headphones before forking out truck loads of money.

As orthodynamic headphones (not sure if i spelt that wright) i think theyre hard to drive, i think?
theyre supposed to be amazing though, but ive never been able to try them myself, probably a good thing considering i cant really afford them lol.

As for tube amps, yeah they sound lovely and warm but unless you go HIGH end, they just lack the detail of a good mosfet amp.
