Oh just btw to the whole thread the HD-580 are better than any of the sennheiser 5xx line of headphones they are basically a cheaper build of the HD-600 and 650 as the the 580 and 600 and some 650 share the same driver the only difference are the materials and design of the housing(the 580 uses more plastic than the 6xx). The 580 sound the closest to the 6xx line which im sure most agree are some very highly regarded headphoens. The 580 and 6xx line of phones do need a decent amp more than some of the other 5xx type headphones. The 580 are out of production so dont expect to find any new but used ones in good condition are perfectly fine.
Moral of this thread if there is one should be good headphones need good (tube) amps and good amps need good sources.
Id say the system I would like the most and seems like it would fit the OP would be the Hifiman he-500 and a good tube hybrid amp but i dont recomend anything from schiit nor would i recommend any of the hifiman amps.

No, really? They're not as bassy as the bassiest open headphone in the price range? The DT990 isn't perfect either. Why don't you bring up any of its downfalls? I prefer the DT990 but I could see why some people wouldn't.

I'm not buying it and it sounds like you have some sort of bias against sennheiser tbh.

As i said before, if you're going for a tube amp it needs to be a good one, i hear little dot are good and you can always swop out the tube itself to find one that best suits your taste.
Thing is once youve paid for the tube amp and good headphone, you'll have spent so much you could have just got a pair of hd700's which are far less fussy about amps.
You started this thread asking if the hd598 is good, yes it is, and tbh i would just save a truck load of money and get something in that price range.
How about the sony mdr-xb1000, it has the sound signiture you're asking for.
Thing is you want booming bass, ie: coloured headphones, well an expensive headphone shouldnt be that coloured, so you hear the music exactly as intended.
IMHO the more nuetral the better, but sound is subjective, theres no wrong answer, just opinions, example i hate electrostatic headphones (maybe just because the price makes me sick) but that doesn't meen you wont love them.
I say audition some headphones instead of listening to us lot, or take a chance on something more reasonable like the mdr xb 1000, they have very strong bass and are otherwise good quality.
Just my 2 cents.

Hey you asked what I meant. That is what I meant. I get that it is an obvious statement. But if it is so obvious, then why did you even bother telling him about the sennheiser stuff after he stated he likes boomy bass? Doesn't that make you the fool?

Secondly. My mom has the 598s, I have the AKGs, and my neighbor has the audiotechnica ad900x. We all agree that the 598s are ok on all of our sound equipment, but the audio technical sounds better if you have a sound card or something decent to play them back on, and the AKGs sound the best, but only when they have a dedicated amp.

For a guy who admitted that he hasn't heard the audio technica headphones, you sure seem to know a whole lot about them rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gifrolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

Oh and yes, I do have something against Sennheiser. They overcharge wayyyy too much just for the brand name. In the end you are not buying good headphones, you are just buying expensive ones.

LOL dude, do you know anything about audio products at all? Everything you have been saying so far has been predicated on other peoples opinions other than yours it seems. Have you even heard half the stuff you are talking about? I doubt it.

The little dot amp is a piece of junk. It does not use good tubes what so ever, and it can actually sound pretty harsh regardless of the rolled tubes. The bottle head DIY kit will sound better. I know that a DIY kit means you have to build it yourself, so don't bother pointing out the obvious, but I figure if we can all build PCs, we should be able to follow tutorials easily enough to build an amp.

And what the hell kind of pot have you been smoking. I am listening to a tube amp right now that cost me 300 bucks and it sounds better than half of the crap on the market. The reason being is it is custom built and it isn't over priced like nuts. Plus, to think that he is going to spend as much as the hd700s is just plain ignorance on your part. Not that I like this amp much either, but the schiit valhalla is better with rolled tubes than the little dot.

As for electrostatic headphones, you seem to not like like anything that is good and really love stuff that is absolute junk don't you? You also contradicted yourself as well. If you want things to sound as precise as possible, then electrostatics have close to 0 distortion which is good for you.... apparently. And actually, what you probably heard was a whole lot of dust on the drivers.

I do agree with auditioning several headphones though.

@ Tjj226 Angel
seriously? you've got an attitude problem pal, why you trying to mug me off? you know NOTHING about me. i just haven't got time for people like you.

to OP, i'm not some little kid who doesn't know what they're chatting about, as that sennheiser hating "angel" up there likes to think.
i'm a 31 year old sound engineer who used to also work repairing audio equipment, my uncle is also a sound engineer, i take after him.
i own HD598, K702 and K240studio, i used to own HD590 and my sister owns owns the ATH-AD700 and HD555.
i use hifi amps and mixing desks for my headphones, as i said earlier i have little experience with HP amps, though my uncles musical fidelity V-can 2 is very good.
seeing as you where asking repeatedly for advice on HP amps, and wasn't getting much feedback, i gave it ago, based on reviews and headfi.org (excellent site for headphone advice btw, would be better for you than asking on overclock.net)
everything i've told you with the exception of HP amps is based on the TONNS of auditioning i've done in shops, at home, my uncles and a few studios.

whenever i do use the web for advice though, im EXTREMELY thorough, i have OCD (please dont anyone take the piss) i NEED to know absolutely EVERYTHING about anything i research, i can go without sleep for days untill i do.

i'm not sure about in the US, but in the UK the HD700 is £600 (thats cheaper than most electrostatic headphones) the k702 is £250, a decent tube amp is ATLEAST £300 pounds (though little dot is half that and you can change the tubes and make them sound real nice) i don't think its unrealistic to suggest the HD700 based on the above, and you saying under $1k (obviously angel does though) plus they sound amazing, yes i've actually head them, no there not worth £600 but still much better than k702 + tube amp and more convenient too.

the reason i hate electrostatics is because, i've heard a pair of audeze LCD2, and ok they obviously sound good, but my god why spend so much, its desgusting really,
thing is electrostatic is inherently expensive and i just don't think any headphone is worth that sort of money, even the "cheap" electrostatics are still really expensive.

you're looking for headphones that are coloured, with bass, there's really no point spending loads then.

the advice i've given you is no different than i would give a friend, i'm not about point scoring "cough"Tjj226 Angel"cough"

seriously though, i'm sure you'll get loads of help here http://www.head-fi.org/

good luck smile.gif
