[Softpedia] Opera ditches its own browser engine in favor of WebKit

The company announced that it is going to adopt the WebKit engine for all of its browsers on mobile platforms, something not particularly surprising, but also that it is stopping development of its desktop browser and will start supporting Chromium, the open source version of Chrome.

Basically, this means that Opera will no longer be developing its own HTML layout engine, Presto, and that it will slap an Opera label on Chromium and call that its desktop browser.
...

In the mobile space, it will be just another company that takes the WebKit engine and slaps some UI elements on top of it. There are now only four major browser makers in the world, Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Apple, and just three layout engines, Trident, Gecko and WebKit.

"Opera Software today announced reaching the milestone of 300 million monthly users across all its browser products on phones, tablets, TVs and computers."

Really, 300 million people use Opera? Really? Are you sure its not like 3 million, maybe 30 mill?

Don't forget that Opera is bigger on the mobile side.

I'm not so sure about this - I really really like Opera frown.gif. Either I'm misreading it (I've read the source, and the orignal article, as well as the other article the original mentions) but I still think that it's just an engine move.

Hence the title, Opera ditched their browser engine in favor for WebKit. I'll agree that the Softpedia one was kinda "ick" making it think that Opera is completely gone and the project is disbanded when it isn't.

Well I hope they keep all the settings and UI style.
I have used Opera for years, and really love it even though it has its bugs. The Opera team is quite cool when it comes to new stuff, and if I don't remember wrong they where the ones to use tabbed browsing first!

I know quite a lot of people on OCN use Opera too, but of course its not as big as Chrome and Firefox users, but still seen many on here!

Opera isn't just going to be Chrome with a sticker on top. New versions of Opera will still be Opera, just with a different layout engine under the hood. You won't hardly know the difference other than pages looking more like they would on Chrome. Their stated purpose is to free up more time for development of other areas of their browsers, so if anything I would expect Opera to get better instead of worse.

This would actually allow me to move back to opera, because website compatibility forced me to switch to Chrome last year. I miss all the nice features of opera. As long as the UI is Opera and not Chrome I'll be a happy camper.
