Question about power draw from my system.

Thread Starter
Hello folks !

I don't know if the subject makes any sense , so i will describe what i mean.

I have a I7 930 overclocked at 4ghz , 12 gb of ram (6 stick ) , Tri-sli gtx 570 , 3 HDD , 2 SSD , Watercooling system for the CPU and 12 fan in total .

All of this powered by a Corsair HX1000.

At idle , i pull between 480-515 Watt

When playing a game , (no more than 60% load ) i draw between 790-820 Watt

But , when at full load , it sometimes exceed 1000W ( this only happens when running benchmarks, and it doesn't stay any longer than 2-3 sec over 1000W )

My question is , even thought on Corsair's website it states that i have what is recommended , do you think there's any danger for the system ?

Only when you're running benchmarks.

How are you measuring the power draw?

That's a good question . My ups (cyberpower) came with a software , but that's a good point because i dont know if its accurate ...

Should be fairly accurate.
However, your UPS is measuring input power (AC), power supplies are rated for output power (DC), and you're confusing them (and ignoring conversion efficiency losses).
Simply put, your PSU is about 80% efficiency at full load, that translates into the following... for your PSU do deliver 1000W DC (it's full rated power), it would would need to draw 1250W AC (from the mains/UPS), the difference is lost as heat.
What that tells you is the following, you're in no way approaching it's full rated power. smile.gif

Side note:
Even if you were to see 1500W at the wall, you still shouldn't alarm yourself.... the exact same iteration of the CWT PUC platform used by the HX 1000, has be rated at 1200W+ by other manufacturers, 1500W even, in the case of Thermaltake.
Corsair rated it for 1000W for efficiency reasons (they wanted the 80+ logo) and product/portfolio planning reasons.

Side note 2.
You have an old unit, which is highly inefficient by today's standards, you're running a pretty demanding system there... if you're Folding or doing anything similar, you should seriously contemplate buying a new, more efficient unit. It would save you money in the long run, and it won't function as a space heater either.

Thank you very much for clearing things up. I work as a salesman for a Master electrician , so i know what you are talking about thumb.gif even if we don't work much with DC lol

About my old unit , if the only thing i do is gaming , should i still upgrade it ? i had in mind to keep it 2 more years and change it at the same time as my graphic cards , what do you think ?
