you can get a pair of Focal CMS50 for $1100 then add a subwoofer later. you just need to make sure the subwoofer has unbalanced or balanced out. if you go passive you will need to spend at least $250-300 on a integrated amplifier. I walk into my local HiFi stores with a budget and almost always go over it haha

DIY is totally an option. Though at $1,000. It would be best if you auditioned speakers. If there isn't a place nearby that specializes in audio equipment, you can usually get auditions from home theater stores.
