XSPC W/B on GTX 670 questions

Thread Starter
So last night I installed my XSPC waterblock on my EVGA 670 SC card and I have a couple of questions for you gurus as I am new to this. First off the instructions say not to overtighten the screws because it can damage the pcb. Well I didn't overtighten but I did snug them and upon inspection it appeared that the pcb was flexing. I backed one of the four screws off right around the chip but it's definitely not tight now, in fact there is a paper thin gap between the block and the pcb but the flex is not as noticable now. Is this ok or should I tighten it back up?
My second question is related to the backplate. I installed an EK backplate on it (the XSPC one was ugly imo) and it fits like a glove but I noticed that some of the pins make contact with the backplate. It looks like they are capacitor pins that didn't get trimmed short enough when they soldered them. I didn't bust out a multi meter to see if that backplate is conductive but it is steel. Should I put some electrical tape on the contact points to be safe?

As long as the block is making good contact with the chips then you're OK. You definitely don't want to be flexing the card itself. As for the metal backplate, you also don't want the contacts touching bare metal. The electrical tape would be a good idea.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I read one member having issues with the cooler not making good contact and he ended up using a copper shim between the chip and the block. I'm hoping not to have to do that but my tim spread looked good so fingers crossed. I'll bust out some electrical tape for sure. Thanks for the reassurance, and if anyone else has had any experience like this I'm all ears.

I had the same problem with mine so I put the factory cross-brace/back-plate back on the card with the waterblock. It really helped me get snug without warping the PCB.

Wait. There is a brace on the factory backplate that comes off wha-smiley.png I didn't see that. Now I'm gonna have to check for that tonight when I get home.

I looked at some pics online of the OE backplate and I don't think mine's removable. It's the SC 4gb version and it came with a full backplate on it. Can't reuse the backplate because it's several inches longer than the card now. Too bad because it's sexy. I'll mess with it some more tonight. I need to insulate that EK backplate from those pins anyway. Upon further research it seems that the backplate is anodized aluminum, which is not a good conductor at all. I think i might play it safe with the tape anyway. Now to just get that pcb straight...

Just an update on this for anyone who cares. The flex was coming from the backplate. One of the cap leads sticks through a bit too much and when I put the backplate on it would push the board up, causing the flex. I ended up putting a strip of electrical tape on the underside of the backplate and using an extra washer on the screw that was closest to that cap lead. Looks to be just fine now thumb.gif
