My upgrade, was it a good choice for the money?

Thread Starter
I had a budget of $300. I spent a lil over that but it was fine. Mostly because I through in a Rosewell laptop case for my gf's new lappy.

I mostly wanted to upgrade my CPU-MOBO-RAM. I added in an aftermarket cooler. For OC purposes and because I have always ran stock coolers and I wanted it to look nice and work better. biggrin.gif

So the rig I am working with right now is the one in my signature. I would post the details, but its easier to just check the siggy.

Here is the parts I upgraded to.

CPU - AMD FX-6100 3.3Ghz ( I could have went with the 6300 but money was tight)
Mobo - MSI 970A with UEFI BIOS
RAM - Kingston HyperX XMP Blu Red Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Cooler - XIGMATEK Dark Knight II SD1283 Night Hawk Edition CPU Cooler with Stealth Aerospace Industry Thermal conductive ceramic coating ALL intel AMD IVY BRIDGE compatible

Along with the laptop case I told you about I spent $309.28 which includes shipping.

Question I have is.

Q: Is this a good CPU for overclocking?
A:

Q: Considering my budget, did I make good choices?
A:

Q: Will I have any problems fitting the Dark Knight II?
A:

Q: About how much of a performance boost should I see?

Q: Is this a good CPU for overclocking?
A: Yes, it is. Any FX will overclock like a mofo if you can cool it and have a good enough motherboard to handle it. One major concern is that motherboard. Of the MSI 970 boards, the G46 is the only one that's reliable for any overclocking, so I hope you have that model. And I would have found a few extra dollars and got the FX-6300. Vishera is much better than Bulldozer.

Q: Considering my budget, did I make good choices?
A: Within the budget, you probably couldn't have done a lot better. But if you did this for gaming, you might have been better off with a GPU upgrade. Depends on what you're going to use this for.

Q: Will I have any problems fitting the Dark Knight II?
A: It's about the same size as a Hyper 212, and that will fit on just about any full-size board, so you should be fine.

Q: About how much of a performance boost should I see?
A: Compared to a 9150e, a lot. But in gaming, that GTS 250 won't keep up very well.

You need a better choise on the mobo if you are planning on ocing the cpu. That MSI mobo has the highest VRM failure rate over all the MSI mobos.

Meh...the 6100 just isn't a good value in my opinion or at least not when compared to the price of a FX8300 and FX4350. We are probably years away from six thread utilization and anything that would pop up sooner than that will be handled just fine with four. So if the budget was tight I'd have gone with a FX4350 instead...or else the A10-5700. For the money I don't think you can get much better. If you want more CPU don't stop until you get into a Intel 2500K or better or else a FX8350 and if you don't want that much...go with the FX4350 or A10. You will not regret it.

You will likely not see much improvement in gaming. I would say close to none. The very large majority of games are GPU bound and not CPU bound.

You will need decent VRMs...for a good overclock I'd want at least 6+1 phase power. I believe most of the failures were on the FX8xxx series, but this still is not a great board to OC with even if you have a 6100 in it...I am fairly sure that board is 4+1 phased power, but I am not certain. I've avoided it.

I really wanted the 6300, but since I had to get my gal a case for her laptop, it cut my budget a lil short. If I didn't get that case I would have been able to get it.

I looked and all the failures for that board were for FX8XXX. and phase power was 4+1. I

I'm not as savvy on OCing as you all are. I'm really new to it. So I am not looking to do any serious overclocking. Just something to break into the OCing club with. I know with my old cpu, mobo, and ram, that OCing was not much of an option. I've read you can OC the 9150e, but it is still stock @1.8Ghz. so you can't push it to high.

There are some good 4+1 mobo for ocing with FX 4*** and FX 6*** and there is 2 4+1 mobo good for ocing with FX8***. You just need to know what mobo has good quality 4+1 phase power, but MSI is not on that list. But Yes in most cases you want a 6+1 or higher phase power for ocing any FX chip.

If anything I just want to push it to 4.0Ghz if I can. That is what I am pushing for. For some reason I like MSI boards. I don't know why, I just do. I heard Gigabyte/Asus are some of the best and Asrock is about the worst.

I will keep this in mind. I know by next year I will have more OCing under my belt and will have a decent budget to pump into a totally new rig.

-

Seems like the only bad part about my rig is the lack of a SSD and my GTS 250. The GPU only has a benchmark of 906. Yet does the company matter, as in It is an EVGA Superclocked . Not just a stock GTS 250.

In addition, I am thinking of spending some more money...(lol) to get a better GPU. I want to make the budget...lets say...no more then $150 after shipping/taxes..what do you all suggest?
