I would think so, but a dual core always helps regardless
I'm with you though, I'm tryin to get a dual core put into my sig rig. I'd like quad sooo much but I don't know if I can shell that much right now.

Which card?

There is not much difference between a good overclocked Opty 165 or an X2... either shuold be able to reach 3.0 GHz if you have a good stepping.

he was talkin about the 8800

just for a little comparison, I have the 8800GTX, and with my sandy at 3059. I was only able to get 7904 in 3Dmark06

how would I increase the OC on my 7900GT w/o using a volt mod? I know it's simple to do but I really don't feel like risking the card. if I got a aftermarket cooler, say the VF900, would that help?

Single core definately would bottleneck it.

I had an Opteron 165@ 2.9 GHz with my Crossfire X1900's and that one showed a CPU bottleneck. ... 3DMark06 with that ris was about 10k. Thus, I assume that Dual Core AMD (either Opty or X2, either of which should max out at around 3.0 GHz) will bottleneck the 8800 series.

I know you don't want to hear it.... but... Core 2 Duo seems the only solution if you don't want a bottleneck. And even then it might still bottleneck you (esp. when you go SLI, in which case Quad Core is the only way out)

but hey, what are we talking about? Any system that hits 10k or more on 3DMark06 will run any game you like. That'll bottleneck in 3DMark06 does not mean that'll bottleneck always. Many games are much less CPU dependent than 3DMark06 is. Oblivion for example does not bottleneck at all, since it relies much more on GPU.

yikes, so i'd need a dual for a 8800gtx. dang that close to a grand with a new psu.. It too bad I can't yank a 2x 4400+ out of one of the render farm machines i got.
a grand????

Opteron 165 for about $160... Good PSU for abuot $170 ... why need to spend more?

And there is no reason whatsoever to buy a DX10 card yet. Just wait and let those prices drop!

those OCZ gameXtreme ones are pretty good from what I hear, the 600W, and it's cheap. not the best but it gets the job done.
