Pre-Build Server Research

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I'm pretty new to Overclock.Net, but I did some searching around and I haven't quite found the resource that I'm looking for if it exists. I'm starting some research on whether or not I need a server and if I do what kind of hardware I'll need. More specifically hardware-wise, what kind of CPU and motherboard should I invest in? A couple of the features I'd like to have and use are the following:

VM Box
Web Server
VPN Server
File Server / NAS
Computer Backup
Game Server
FTP Server/Dropbox
Teamspeak/Mumble/Vent Server
Media Server
DVR (PVR)
SVN server

Now I more than likely won't have all of these on one box but the ability to have them are all nice. I also realize that a lot of these features are software based, but my question is, as I mentioned before, what kind or how powerful of a CPU/Motherboard will/should I need? Now all of these are going to be personal, so nothing more than myself or possibly my roommates.

Thanks for all the help!

Best bet is just get ESXI then you can run as many virtualised servers as you require

hardware wise will just depend on what exactly you want. if you do DVR/PVR you will need alot of storage space, if you do gameserver lotsa ram and cpu grunt etc

Umm.. Right now, probably around $1,000 USD including case, NIC, and probably a one or two hard drives. Start off small and add more type idea.

That first one is pretty nice, but you may want to swap out drives. Maybe keep 2 for the OS and the rest for spares and add 2 or 4 2TB drives. They are pricey though.

Maybe all new drives... I'm just paranoid lol
