CPU Upgrade from Phenom II - Page 2

Added a link to rig in my signature. The cooler is some standard universal socket (rocketfish) thing, however its really large and keeps my temps around 38ish full load.

Like others have said a SSD and a Better GPU is going give performance boosts like you wouldnt believe.

SSD will give you a boot time in the seconds, all your programs are going to load 5 fold faster, and transferring large files will no longer be a waiting game like it is with a traditional HDD.

Better GPU pretty much self explanatory.

a 6850 is a great card, I have one my self, it runs every game i throw at it at max settings with all the eye candy turned up @ 60+ FPS. (On my 720p 50in Plasma TV)

but if you want better frames on your 1080p monitor or TV, you are definitely going to need a stronger card. HD 7950 maybe.

all this and a 4.0GHz over-clock and You should be set until Steamroller rolls through, (a year goes by a lot faster than you think) and when it does you will still have a bomb diggty SSD and Badass GPU.

Well it looks like theres an OCZ Agillity 3 in there already, so thats good. Yea upgrade your gpu to a either a radeon hd 6950, 7870, or 7950 and you would be fine; you could also get another 6850 for crossfire. ive heard some things about "micro-stuttering" which i know nothing about on some games though.

Just thought of this: get a hd 7870 tahiti LE. Think of it as a hd 7930 or go geforce with a gtx 570 or 660ti (for some reason the newer 660ti is cheaper than the older 570 unless the 570 is on sale). yeah

I'm one off those few who are skipping Bulldozer and Piledriver, This Phenom X6 is giving me all the performance I need in games with no bottleneck on the GPU also. Waiting on the next CPU's that AMD will release!

As a Phenom and 6950 owner, I'd advise a 6950 or higher, preferably the 79xx series if budget allows. Your 965 will be much more capable than my aging 940, and still my 6950 is maxed in BF3 (GPU100%, CPU@3.3Ghz90%). If you are running close to 4Ghz with your 965, it will be a great match with a 79xx! No need to upgrade for another year IMHO.

I've decided to go with a sapphire 7950 for now and work on overclocking. I've gotten to 3.6 stable but anything above 3.7 causes my temps to skyrocket. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better cooler? I was thinking along the lines of a closed loop liquid cooler.

I have the base model Thermaltake Water 2.0 (Performer) and am running my 965 at 4.2 and only seeing 55 degrees tops after running prime95 or intel burn test for 8+ hours. Pretty darn good bang for the buck. Would also reccommend the Antec Kuhler 620. A Friend his running his i7 at 4.7 ghz on that, not exactly sure of load temps but I know they are well within tolerance.

The Corsair H100 is supposed to be the cream of the crop with closed loop coolers and im sure you will see plenty of recommendations for that one but it costs a bit more than the others. I got mine for 40$ at newegg around black friday.

I've got the 955 in my rig. I'm waiting for Steamroller because there's rumors of 20-30% IPC improvement!

Or..Sunbeamtech core-contact 120..Silenx Effizio 120..hyper 212+..or this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835214023&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-CPU+Cooling-_-Enermax-_-35214023
mugen 2..
I have an exceptional 965..It'll run 4.3-4 stable..The cooling helps..AMD chips scale with cold sooooo good.

An H6O would do fine with that. Read up on all the guides, you should be able to get 4.0 at least. I just finished my buddie's 965BE/990FX at 4.2 no problem.
