Low FPS on Skyrim with my OC'd 7970?

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, I don't really know if this is in the right section (I thought about posting it in PC Gaming but decided to post here instead) but I seem to be having random FPS fluctuations in Skyrim. Outside my fps will constantly ebb and flow from about 38-60 FPS with no noticeable lag. I'm playing the game with everything on Ultra, no FXAA, 2x AA, and 4x AF. The only graphics mods I have on are "HD 2K Textures Lite". I'm not even using an ENB. I feel like this is a very low FPS for a highly overclocked 7970.

I hate to say it but probably you have a CPU bottleneck.
Skyrim is very CPU intensive in cities, patches have optimized the game but still.

Really? I figured that my FX-6100 when OC'd to 4.0 GHz would at least be able to make it through the more intensive games...

I would shoot for 4.5-4.6ghz tbh, Right now, a 4ghz phenom ii would blow past you, and you not even in the same universe as an i5/i7

Don't get me wrong FX 6100 is a great CPU. but you probably want a little more OC like 4.5 GHz.
Also you didn't mention where you get 38 fps but if you get that fps in towns then your CPU might not deliver enough power. Inside dungeons you shouldn't even drop below 60 fps.
Even @ 4.0 GHz I still get bottleneck sometimes with my i7 870. This game is not very optimized for CPUs, it is based on the same engine that is used for Oblivion which came out in 2006..

not a very good cpu for gaming

even 1090t's or 980's are far better for gaming

lol, amd definitly got the gpus right, but fail on their cpu's, getting beat by their previous generation cpu's is an epic fail
