UPDATED Asus Bios 1604 tips - Cross platform results for a 3770K - 3.9 Ghz to 5.3 Ghz

Thread Starter
sonic.gif...for some folks 'fast' is never 'fast enough', and 'stock' is a dirty word...to others, 'stock' is a welcome thought (especially when their oc'ed machine just crashed biggrin.gif )

The question is how much CPU performance you gain by pushing your system to faster and faster speeds - both in terms of its own set-up at different speeds, and also compared to other platforms, i.e. comparing a I7 3770K 4core/8 threads to an 8 core Xeon or 12 core AMD Opteron...

..UPDATES now also OC'ed I5 3570 and OC'ed 3930K 6c/12T, and a 990X at over 5.7 GHz (LN2) drum.gif and post #23 with Asus Bios 1604 tips

Using two simple but telling tests from the Aida 64 Extreme Edition tool - the 'CPU Queen' benchmark and the Memory Read test - here are some quick comparative data to see if it is 'worth it'...'"CPU Queen" is an integer benchmark that deals with the classic "Queens problem' in chess, focusing on branch prediction capabilities and the misprediction penalties'. CPU Queen is used by various Hardware Review sites to compare motherboard and CPU performance.

"Memory Read" shows the maximum memory 'read'speed in MB / second

...when it gets to overclocking your CPU, for example via vCore increases, it is worth remembering a line from the movie 'Bladerunner'..."The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long" ...then again, there are some reasonably safe limits (you really should research first !) to consider instead 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'...ultimately you alone will have to weigh risk vs reward.

A special thanks to FtW 420 (Benchmarks Editor) for helping with lots of advice, Alancsalt (list keeper and forum moderator) and Valgaur who started the official Ivy Bridge 'delid' thread thumb.gif

The system used to generate the numbers below is a I7 3770K housed in an Asus / ROG Maximus V Extreme motherboard with 32 GB of G.Skill 2400 Mhz DDR3 RAM. All BIOS settings (including memory timings) were kept identical for the comparative runs, so no differential 'optimization' of any kind...

The summary table is followed by individual 'spoilers' for selected speeds which in turn leads to screenshots of Aida64 that also contain cross-platform comparative data. Over time, more benchmarks will be added....and your feedback and contributions are more than welcome

Enjoy...biggrin.gif

...well, thanks again for your great thread which helped me avoid injuries to the CPU though not necessarily my fingers...but you did post a warning on your front page biggrin.gif

Seriously, it can be easy to upkeep a thread / table with all these eager folks who dragged their systems past the 5 Ghz line tongue.gif

every now and then, with retirements etc, management call for nominations for moderators. you can nominate yourself or others. management sift through them and offer the positions to those they think appropriate.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1240441/overclock-net-moderator-nominations-2012-closed so watch that forum if serious... it's not everyone's cup of tea... wink.gif

lists, data entry, not as exciting as overclocking.. but part of it somehow?
