Some noob questions about OCing a 1035T

Hello everybody.

When I started graduate school a few years ago I bought myself an Asus Essentio desktop. It's served me well for quite a while, and recently I upgraded the video card to a GTX570 and noticed a great improvement in performance in games (now that I'm done with grad school I have a LOT more free time biggrin.gif). However, I notice that sometimes I still have some chugging and whatnot in some of the games I play (MWO being one of them).

Since I bought this computer from Best Buy I have a locked motherboard. A buddy of mine told me that the new AM3+ motherboards are backwards compatible with the older AM3 CPUs. Is this correct? If so could I purchase one, slap my Phenom 1035T in it, and give OCing it a try in order to save myself a few bucks rather than buying a new motherboard AND CPU?

Any advice would be great smile.gif.

Yes you can put an AM3 chip in an AM3+ board. Almost always that will work. Double check for known issues with whatever board you choose though.
Yeah go ahead and OC the 1035T. It will do fine for what you need it to.

Make sure its a good board for overclocking though. Tell us your price range and we might be able to help better in that way.

As far as price goes I'd like to stay within $100-150 if possible, but could probably go up to about $200 if need be. I also did figure I'd probably have to get myself a new case and cooler for the CPU as well. I did upgrade the power supply when I upgraded the video card over the summer (750W PS) so I think I'm OK in that department. Any more advice is great!

The last time I did anything like this was back in 1998 when I was 13 years old so I might as well be totally new.

Any of these boards would work. LINK

The Sabertooth is what I use, and recommend. I almost bought a variation of the Gigabyte once.And I once owned something similar to the other two ASUS boards. (Newegg.com now has a deal on an "open box" Sabertooth right now.) Overclocks should be a breeze on any of those boards.

They are what I would be comfortable buying. All of them are 990 northbridge boards. So they will last you a long time. Even if you decide to upgrade later to a better CPU your board will do it no problem. (Might have to update BIOS before you do though.)

As for a new case; You wouldnt have to, but make sure your case will hold an ATX sized mobo if you decide not to get a new case as all those boards I recommended are ATX. I would probably recommend most cases on this. LIST Do some homework though. The list will get you started in the right direction. Note: all these cases and mobos I recommended will give you front panel USB 3.0 support.

A good cooler for the value is the Cooler master 212+ EVO. Its not the greatest cooler out there by any means, but for what you get for the money it is good. It will get you a decent overclock.

Ask anymore questions you may have. Its better to know your options before buying.

I did have one more question that comes to mind, just based on experience what do you think I can reasonably overclock that processor to? I'd like to break the 3.0 threshold for sure, but I'd love to push it as far as it will go smile.gif.

There is also a Biostar TA970XE and Biostar TA990FXE that is cheap and good ocer mobo.
TA970XE is about $108 on newegg and the TA990FXE is about $130 on newegg too.

You should have no problem hitting 3.0GHz on little to no voltage jump. Depending on your chip.

I'll bet $1 that you can run at 280*13 with minimal volt increase (maybe none).

And don't neglect your ram. When overclocking with bus speed your ram will likely cause you issue before that CPU does.

Good luck with your overclocking. locked Thuban are fun to play with.

Real solid motherboard recommendation in this thread. That will
give you an upgrade path in the future. Recommend getting a motherboard
that is know to have a solid VRM (8+2 or digital 6+2) and can run high
HT ref clock (like FSB back in the day. AMD now uses HT ref clock while Intel
is using BLK).

with 13.5x mulitplier you need 300 HT ref clock (FSB) to get 4.0GHz.
DDR3-1600 is all you need. lower latency is better for our chips.

Thanks for all the advise guys. One last question before I patiently await my tax return dollars and then my parts... I'm looking to upgrade my RAM as well so with the OC in mind any recommendations there? I currently have 8GB worth that came with the computer originally, but it's on 4GBx2 sticks and it's 1333Mhz. I was thinking about getting 8GBx2 at 1600Mhz (so I can always get another set in the future to make it 32GB if I really want) as Heuchler suggested. Any thoughts on this? Worth doing? Not worth doing?
