I was thinking about getting 8GBx2 at 1600Mhz (so I can always get another set in the future to make it 32GB if I really want) as Heuchler suggested. Any thoughts on this? Worth doing? Not worth doing?
I would go with a set of 1866 or 2133 2 x 8gb. This way you can hit higher FSB speed when you are ocing that Phenom II x6.

It doesn't affect your gaming much, no but you're still losing overal system performance. I recommend grabbing some low latency DDR3 like mine. Back when DDR3 first hit you could actually grab 1600Mhz and 1866Mhz CL6 DDR3, now that stuff is really really hard to find. My OCZ Reapers are 1333Mhz CL6-6-6-18 and with a little voltage increase they do 1500Mhz CL6-7-6-20 [FlawleZ].
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I would go with what Dixon recommended. 1866 or 2133 kit. Then downclock them to tighten up the memory timing.
I don't know if they still sell memory with tight timing but you can find people that have lowered the freq to get tighter timing.
That helps Phenom II perform better. Intel memory timing doesn't matter as much because their memory controller [IMC]
runs at full cpu frequency [please correct me if i'm wrong].

Also, when you upgrade to Piledriver/Steamroller 1866 or 2133 memory will help (not hold your system back - less of
a bottleneck). Officially AMD doesn't support higher than 1333 on the x6 but people run them up to 2000.

Overclocking a multiplier locked CPU is different than Black Edition as you can't choose cpu feq and memory
independently. You can pick the divider for the memory but it will be based upon your HT ref clock [FSB/CPU bus].

If You Have the Choice Between CAS9 DDR3-1333 DDR3-1066 memory and CAS7, do not hesitate. Go for the DDR3-1333. The only exception to the rule is DDR3-1600 CAS9 That is in practice Slower than DDR3-1333 CAS7 on AM3. latency Does this mean That is no longer an issue? Not really. It continued to play a major role in Many tests.

does AMD Phenom II X6 1090T support memory above 1333MHz?

GTA IV improves by %2
Average improvement 800 to 1066: %7
Average improvement 1066 to 1333: %3.5
Average improvement 1333 to 1600: %2.3

%7 is noticeable. %3.5 MIGHT be noticeable. But you'll never see the difference in %2.3.

Phenom II X6 and DDR3-2000 It's Working!

Indeed, DDR3-2000 doesn't provide big performance benefits in real applications. Its average advantage over DDR3-1667 with the same timings is a mere 1-2%

I would recommend getting your motherboard first. Start overclocking. Then see what memory kit you want to get.
I would get a good heatsink. Thuban should be kept under 62c.

True Spirit 140 for $39.95 shipped (comes with TY-140 $15 fan).

I would wait for somebody to recommend a memory kit. What motherboard are you planning on buying?

I was probably going to go with this motherboard.

Any suggestions based on that? smile.gif You guys have been very very helpful so far!

Also, any other recommendations on coolers/heatsinks/etc. that you think I may need? I'm open to suggestions!

As for RAM, you should be fine with anything on this LIST. Its a long list. Just choose a few from that list and then ask advice on what you choose. Of course others would work fine, but this list is what I would recommend you start with.

Cool! Currently I was looking at this because it's right at my price point. I'm still shopping around though smile.gif.

I was also looking at this case for the new parts too, The current case I have has terrible airflow, and it's honestly no longer the original computer I bought anyways biggrin.gif. Any thoughts?

Both good choices. THESE sticks have a little better timings than the vipers, but not too much of a difference. The corsair case is nice.

Also I took Jolly Roger's advise and looked at this cooler, but in the details for compatibility it doesn't list my series of processor. Is it the socket that matters more or the CPU?

Yes, its more the socket. It will work on your board.
I would research coolers a lot more though. i say that because I have gone through many coolers. Its a good cooler, but its an entry level cooler. Also, some coolers will not fit in every case. So basically there is a lot of homework involved in finding the right cooler for you. I'm just looking for something that will keep it cool enough to crank it up to 3.2 or higher at the moment. I can always save my pennies up to get a better cooler later on and/or a better CPU later on. This is mainly a project to crank a little more out of my CPU for another year or two before I upgrade it all together. If that fan can get me through that then I'll be totally satisfied smile.gif.
