Will buy E6300 in the morning (less than 12hrs) - Page 2

The E6300 is only good when you have good ram. I plan on getting 3.6ghz after I'm done lapping the CPU.

I'll buy me a pair of DDR2800 maybe from G.Skill or Super Talent in the spring. Basically, I'll be doing more upgrades early next years so for now i think I'd settle for 2.4GHz - 3.0GHz with my current specs. But I'm still curious of how far i can go with the E6300.

Bah, I'm running my memory @ 2.1 w/ 4-4-4-12 , DDR2-916. That's 458FSB, 3205MHz. If you have good PC2-6400 Ram, you should be all set.

I hit a wall beacuse my ram doesn't support speeds higher than 460MHz on my Gigabyte board. The P5B-E is supposedly an excellent board for the price.

In retrospect, the E6400 would have done an extra 458MHz, which would have brough me to 3.6GHz. It was a full 50$ more though. (about 20% more than E6300)

EDIT: I just checked out your ram and that will SEVERLY limit the OC. PC2-4200 is a no go for E6300. Don't expect much overclocking. The stock FSB on the E6300 is 266, which is exactly the same speed as the RAM for 1:1 operation. In other words, a 1Mhz increase in FSB is already an overclock of 1MHz on the ram.

You'll be lucky to hit 2.2~2.4 ish.

RAM... if you look on various websites (anandtech, xbit labs) the Gigabyte board has problems over 460 with the Micron D9's.... but @ my current speed the Northbridge is very toasty and I suspect that I'd need a new NB cooler to push further, even with diffrent ram.

POOK, read this article:

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2871

It compares the S3 with the Biostar T-Force, as well as the higher end boards (P5B-E, other gigabyte and biostar boards)... an excellent read, plus it exposes the issues with the D9 memory and the Gigabyte boards.

Just less than 1 or 2 hrs I'll bring home the E6300 My parent is cashing out the checks at the bank so yeah im waiting for the $$$ and head out to Fry's Electronics near where i live. I wonder if i'd get full speed of the E6300 at stock speed since 2 of my hard drives only have like 50 GB and one 40 GB left.

The S3 should be fine for you, as long as you don't get Micron D9's

Maybe a future BIOS update will correct this, but for now.. it should be perfectly fine if you don't use D9s

I think you need to change a resistor. IE, a hardware mod.

I've brought it! Way way faster than the P4 For now I'll just enjoy Core 2 experience and do some benching later. Last but not least, I'll overclock this baby and see how far i can go with this board and pair of value rams Oh, my idle temperature is around 30-32 (used TAT Speedfan reported 43-44 on idle) i used AS5 but it'd take awhile before the AS5 start to kick in.
