Long long ago back when the idea of internet gaming was just budding and Counter Strike was still in its beta forms, OpenCL (i think was for a time, then later became GL) and DirectX( think it was Direct3D at the time) were supported hand in hand... over time support for one was dropped in favor of the now DriectX. I never understood why, especial (for the time) when openCL/GL looked far better than D3D did on the 386 platform. Ran smoother for me too.

OpenCL had nothing to do with the origins of OpenGL. OpenGL was first released in 1997, and through many missteps in the maintenance of the code base, it became a sloppy mess pretty fast. The code base has been cleaned up considerably in the 4.x versions, and is back to being a viable option for most developers. The only issue is that most developers have game engines that are based on DX alone, or with console specific OpenGL implementations.

Just for clarity, OpenCL has been around for 2008, and OpenGL can be used with or without, although OpenCL provides a way to allow many normally CPU specific functions to be offloaded to the GPU if the developer chooses to do so.

wasn't sure if they were actually related and if it was actually called Open GL or open CL back in the day (using Half-life/counter strike as a point of reference only).

Yeah, I just figured putting the history out there would help clear things up. Sorry if that came off as a little snide, in hindsight it seems a bit confrontational.

Yeah it comes of confrontational, but I didn't feel ... confronted by it, more like a hey, your messing up, get your **** right.

The beta was really buggy for me but I seem to be the only one having that issue. Games are just about all of CS, TF2, HL1, Killing Floor, Serious Sam3, some of the Postal games, Amnesia games, and a bunch of others. L4D2 was supposed to be the first source game as that was the one they had demoed in Linux over 3 years ago but still haven't seen it show up.

Anecdotal, but I was able to achieve playable framerates on a Celeron G1620, using only the on-chip graphics, in Linux. W7 was not playable. Take that with a grain of salt though, because I spent more time tweaking the linux config than I bothered in W7.

And at the end of the day I threw an old 5670 I had laying around in and it works better all around . . .
