Even headlights reduces the range of electric cars considerably. I think the battery tech will still have to improve quite a bit before a fully electric car is about to replace gas powered cars.

I would argue that they already could minus the price. The majority of us travel less then 120 miles a day. 230 to 300 range battery would be good for this. I wouldn't go with the 160 range if your driving 120+ a day as other factors effect battery life.

So even with the headlights and air conditioner most of us can still get what we need out of the battery.

Going out of town? Get a rental. They aren't that expensive. Or get the 300 range battery and your in for a nice rode trip with charging detours. Here in columbus it wouldn't be that bad. It is all those small Ohio cities that could present a problem.

I'm just waiting for graphene super capacitors to come along, they have the potential to be cheap to manufacture, environmentally sound and have high energy and power densities - meaning more range and faster acceleration. They should also be quicker to charge than traditional batteries.

Then we can perfect the electric car.

hybrids and the nissan leaf are using LED headlights now. on the other hand, HIDs only use 35w of power. No modern hybrid/electric vehicle uses halogen lamps.

Making batteries is a very energy intensive process that when included in the pollution footprint of a hybrid or electric car makes demilitarized hummers seem like a green choice. Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel metal hydride batteries have a horrible footprint. Lithium Ion is better but hasn't replaced NmH or Ni-Cd batteries yet for a variety of reasons.

Actually this is not correct for the batteries that are being used in Electric Vehicles. EV batteries production is more environmentally friendly then producing fuel from crude oil by a long shot.

Lithium Ion replaced Ni-Cad batteries in the lareg majority of EVs years ago. As for NiMH, since Chevron owns the patents to Ni-MH, EV manufacturers have been using other cell chemistrys like li-Ion and LiFePO4 anyway instead.
