First off, everything released in the last decade and more has been overclockable, the only real way to compare them effectively and fairly is to first compare how the company releases the product. I am not an NVidia fanboy, nor am I an AMD Fanboy. I went NVidia works better at higher resolutions as SLI seems to have far less microstutter issues and I run 2x 1440p monitors. Stating a fact that the performance of the GTX680 was higher than the performance of the 7970 when it was released does not make me a fanboy for any company.

How is that any different than pretending that clock for clock is all that matters, or overclocked is all that matters?

Firmware updates, which is all the GE comes to, is just that. You can flash a 7970 to the GE bios AFAIK, so there is literally nothing but software release which increased the performance of the cards.
