I have this router. It's a good router, but worth the price? Up to the consumer, I suppose. You'd probably be fine with last year's 56u. I purchased from Best Buy for ~181. You should probably wait for this to hit sub 150.

How do you figure that much? There are 4 stars and in the original post, the link brings you to a page with one 1 star reviews checked. It's one of the highest reviewed routers on smallnetbuilder.

Thread Starter
Sorry if I linked the 1 star reviews first. I may of been looking at those when I posted it.

There's always some consumers that can't figure thing out and give it bad reviews and there's always some units that just don't work. Happens with every product and from what I can tell customer service is trying to resolve those issues.

The promotion is still active for anyone interested. I also adjusted the link.

I did purchase the product and will be putting it in this weekend.. so if anyone is interested in my review I would be more than happy to share it.. we are currently using a belkin n600 and the wireless connect is horrible speed test is showing 1*2mbps and hard lined its 15mbps.. so we will see

You can't deny the fact that this router has some major design flaws, from overheating to being DOA or simply dying after months of use because of overheating. There's little to no air flow that circulates inside the router which results in overheating.

I should get mine tomorrow. Most of the routers Ive ever own usually overheat so I end up just buying a desk portable fan tower lol. I have it blowing directly into the router vent holes and it solved my problem.

something like this http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-4000-Stik-Ultra-Slim-Oscillating/dp/B000MFAOPY/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1361294382&sr=8-11&keywords=portable+fan+tower

its not the exact one but just to show what Im talking about

how do you guys deal with this heating problem? should i put it on my laptop cooler?

And since you included that review, might as well include his:

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/31058-asus-rt-n16-gigabit-n-router-reviewed

Depends what you're needing. The N16 is certainly more than capable.
Holy cow this whole time I thought the deal was for the AC66U woops doh.gif In my mind then the only thing justifying the premium here is if you need to cover a lot of space, have too much interference from neighbors or are running a bunch of busy servers. I think it's pretty unlikely that a home user would push an RT-N16 to it's limits.

This post annoys me a lot. Do you own the router? Are you just basing these claims on the 1* reviews you read on Newegg? Can you deny it?

Any router worth it's weight is going to overheat. This is because everyone sucks and doesn't install many heatsinks or any fans in their routers. This is true of all major vendors - Linksys, Netgear, and ASUS routers all overheat. If you are this worried about it you have two options - do not buy a router or install your own heatsinks and fans.

I had the RT-56U and it used to overheat like crazy. The first one was DOA, the second one would overheat and then shut down so I sent it back to Newegg and got a new one. It still overheats and there are times when it shuts down. I have a feeling it will soon die on me because of this crap design flaw that Asus has chosen with these routers. My friend has the EA-4500 and his router never gets as hot as my router and it never shuts down.
