Just monitor using Heaven/3Dmark - and your normal rotation of games.

75C should be the high for demanding games like Far Cry 3, Witcher 2, Crysis 2 ....."normal" games like Max Payne 3, Call of Duty, etc - id say would be hovering around 65C

And for older gamesl ike Half Life, Bioshock - i just run an underclocked/volted profile

You can run custom fan profiles - something like 50-60% on load..that should drop your max to under 70C...but if youre not overclocking...75C is fine imo

I do agree that FurMark is not representative of normal use (all it does is create heat practically). Even still, I use it quite often and have never seen 100C temperatures from my various graphics cards.

If double confirm that it's down clocking to 2d clocks under load. Use a graph to see before you waste time and gas

Don't send it back if it's not boosting. Boost is an "icing" on top of the cake, not a staple which is guaranteed to run 100% of the time. That's why people like us are here on this forum because we know we can cool it better, we know we can cool it quieter, we know we can get more out of it.

That requires a little digging and understanding the card's limits and how much closer you're edging towards that when raising clockspeeds/voltages .

If I set the power any lower then 20% the card cant hold its boost or even stock clock and downclocks to 500 core. Seems fishy to me. You would think the card should be able to handle its stock clocks without a power boost

from what I see he can't even hold his stock clocks unless the power is set at +20% which isn't normal.

Double confirm that because I'm not sure how reliable his one mention was. If I was someone else I would but he doesn't strike me that way...

An example for you.

Idle at desktop 500core (normal) load up furmark, start the test. Clocks jump to 925 (as they should). After 2-3sec they go down to 850 (ok kinda odd but that still normal I guess) then another 3-4sec later they drop to 500. This is while furmark is up and with catalyst power set to default (zero). If I boost power to 10% the card holds 850 core while running furmark and once in a blue moon jumps to 925 for half a sec then back down to 850. If I set the power to 20% the card hold its 925 boost clock while running furmark. This seems as a issue to me as the card should NEVER downclock to 500core unless idle or watching youtube or something. Not while running a intensive benchmark.

I would try a bios flash to a non-boost 7950 bios. Since the card has a bios switch you are always safe when something goes wrong. Id try it and see if your card runs better.

I have done this once before on another card so I feel I can handle the task. BUT may I ask if you could link me the bios which YOU recommend. I can go dl a few different 7950 bios'es and we wouldnt know if I just picked a bad one. If you could link me to the exact one to try that would be awesome thumb.gif

It depends on which brand of HD7950 you got. Asus, MSI, EVGA etc.
