Update: Abridged

*The following update is an abridged version of updates past, to try and summarize where this build has been rolleyes.gif
(Read this as if someone was recalling the past, "..." means time has past, Anything in [ ] I have added today, 4/1) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
So the state my computer has been since

...

I eagerly awaited the Case-labs S3 Mini-ITX case to be released this --- but then it got delayed. Delayed until the 18th mad.gif
There still is an issue, however: I haven't been with a fully working computer in over -- [Unknown] weeks and I'm dying to trek all of Tamriel and learn about the first Dragonborn (WHY DID YOU HAVE TO RELEASE A DLC RIGHT NOW BETHESDA!!).

...

So with my patience dwindling

...

I remembered the computer my grandma gave me after she upgraded. And ten minutes later:

Here are some pictures of the overall case, not too big. I would even use it as THE case, after all a new paint job and a new power switch, de-rivet the HDD cage and move it, and a new front panel, and this thing could look pretty sweet. But it's missing a place to mount some rads and the airflow stinks to high heaven [having used it a week or two now... IT REALLY STINKS].

...

Will my mobo fit in there? My biggest concern was that I removed this behemoth of a motherboard from a semi-tiny case, so the stand offs are surely in the wrong place, right?

IT DOES!! YAY!! Now let's get this sucker together!

Update: New Parts

With the hopefully, helpful abridged update out of the way and everyone caught up, we can finally move on!

Today I got upset with my temperatures in my "ghetto rig" job, so I found these old fans, some duct tape, zip-ties....

This made things dramatically better, temperatures dropped a lot on the gpu which was the big worry hanging around 80c while hunting in Tamriel :/

Then I had some fun on Newegg.com...

And then more fun at Caselabs (they're great hosts!)

So that means we have:
-The Mercury S3
-The SP120 Fans
-The AF120 Fan
-The Light Bar
-The H100i

So Why Settle On The H100i?

I don't want to bore you, so quickly: It was H100i vs H220, but the H220 doesn't really "fit" on my mobo. I mean it does, but it's such a tight squeeze that I'm not comfortable with that. Additionally, for another $30 I felt the H220 wasn't worth it for me. I won't be adding my gpu in, so there goes the expand ability (my gpu has a custom PCB, the galaxy support tech I talked to already confirmed water blocks will not play nicely but will work). Then the stronger pump really isn't needed since I'll only have a cpu, and on top of that the noise won't really matter to me, I'll be using a fan controller anyways. So IMHO the H220 wasn't a fit for me, but it definitely is an amazing watercooler for those who would use it to it's full potential.

Update: In Depth

Alright, final update of the day (I have plenty more to cover, but we'll save that for later)
I just wanted to cover what the new theme is really quickly, so here we go:

The first game I ever played was Tomb Raider (Heard that a million times right?). But it's not like it was my first "real" game, it was my first game! My parents skipped the whole preschool stuff and put me in front of an old IBM R40 laptop with Tomb Raider running at age 6 or 7 (I can't remember exactly). I wish I could remember which Tomb Raider it was, but i simply can't, it's been so long! Well, anyways, I played the living monkeys out of that game until the R40 kicked the can and now sits in the basement unable to power on without a cord (but it does power on!) and I eventually stopped playing Tomb Raider as at such a young age I was stuck on the simplest of puzzles, no matter how hard I tried. And like all kids at the age I found it best to ignore what I could not have and eventually forgot about Tomb Raider (Blasphemy!). Then came the Tomb Raider Underworld release and it caught my eye enough to snatch it - but not until 8 months after it's release and a computer to play it on :/ (Needless to say I loved it, let my avatar speak for me biggrin.gif)

Then came Tomb Raider: A Survivor is Born (The 2013 Reboot). After preordering, waiting - anxiously waiting - I pre-downloaded the game, played the living monkeys out of that too, and it finally hit me what my computer would be themed on: Tomb Raider.

So following the theme of the logo, Black White Red, I redesigned my vision of a computer to accommodate these colors: Hence the black case, black H100i with LED, the Red Light Bar, the red extensions, the Sp120/Af120 with replaceable color rings. There are other plans (hint paint, hint gpu) but those are still debatable, the gpu more likely to happen and the paint I want to happen but need to get a technique down before I go about that (I'll have to consult my school's art department).

The Name of this build has now been explained if you read carefully, A Survivor is Born is the unofficial name of the game so to say, and fitting none the less. I've updated the OP with two quotes I liked from the game the most.

I'll report back next time with more goodies.
Until then - A Survivor is Born.

I'm currently looking into fan controllers and weather or not I'll really want one :/

Big issue is the fans I got are pwm and apparently that's not very common for fan controllers (makes sense since pwm is suppose to allow you to control the speeds).

I'm thinking a lamptron FC5 v2 or the Fractal Design Adjust 108. The design supports pwn, the FC5 has a sweet display that can be turned red but may require the fans to have 4 pin to 3 pin converters. Either way I'll need a flex bay mount for it, which of course I forgot in my order tongue.gif

That's for the best, though! It just tells me to wait and see what the fans come with and if I can make it work without a fan controller, which may not be an issue as the fans come with a 7v adapter biggrin.gif

Update: The Plaque

With the case looking to ship tomorrow, I realized time was short on getting a back plate design made, so I jumped on Photoshop for a few hours today and had some fun biggrin.gif

First Phase (White is negative space, red is actual color):

Phase 2, No Negative Space:

Final Phase, No Negative Space:

I also finally decided on how I wanted to handle sleeving, and after searching high and low I decided not to sleeve the cables myself. While I think it would be fun, for the cost of sleeving the cables in paracord I could get extentions sleeved in a plastic sleeve that just looks better in my opinion. So I'll be ordering those alongside the gpu backplate. I also think I'll grab some case badges from Trip TCC while I'm at it with the backplate.

That's all I got for this update, see you next update!
Until then - A Survivor is Born.

Update: FINISHED!

Alright, maybe I've forgotten to update more than once, but it's time to unveil the final product. But don't worry, I've got a metric tonnage of pictures coming your way of everything you missed.
So prepare to scroll wheee.gif

First Shipment incoming!

Inbound from Newegg, I've secured the H100i, 2 SP120 fans, and an AF120 (BTW they're 3 pin). There's also a light bar tucked away in there biggrin.gif

Not a big shipment, but what'd you expect? Each fan came with a 7v adapter, which I didn't expect, and I'm sure glad. The fans now sound GREAT and perform exceptionally well with the adapters. But enough of those... now for the good part:

CASELABS!! (And building!)

Now we're talking! Before we begin, please pardon the lowish quality pictures, I only have the camera on my HTC One X tongue.gif

The big - surprisingly light - box has landed!

Inside the sleeve... and paper... so much packaging O.O Now how do I get inside it?
I wish I took a picture, but it took me at least 20 minutes to realize that the side panels LITERALLY pop off :doh!

A few empty shots, with sunglare of course rolleyes.gif

Now... How to get off that white stuff?

Ratchet head! (That's right, screw the ratchet itself!)

And it's off.

Now, what to do next? Let's draw into the bag of goodies and see what we find...

Case Feet! I was wondering how that PSU was supposed to breathe... Speaking of which:

Is now mounted biggrin.gif

Now for the second hardest challange: The HDD Mount. Without instruction, I had a bit of exploring to do - dear lord.

Hmmm... all these parts...

What are these? Sound dampeners?

And what's up with the large area without a thread?

WAIT! Does this thing go here? It fits like it's supposed too...

Okay, mounted one side. Now for the other...

Sigh... That didn't work. START OVER!

Hmm... why is there a large hole and a smaller hole connected?

Wait, this thing is grooved!?

WUT.

There we go! biggrin.gif

Now for the SSD :doh!

Okay, that one was much more straight forward. Now with both of those connected and wired up, let's get this case naked....

I'm seriously considering removing the front panel, this case looks sick without sides! But now's not the time.... We have to deal with that H100i thumb.gif
First up, ditch that stock cooler and clean that CPU:

Alright. Easy enough. Now to mount the radiator onto the front rad mount, only a few screws right? Now just place the radiator, and the fan and start screwing......... ANNNNNNNNNDDDDDD the screws don't fit. WUT. I didn't grab a picture of this because at this point I had already been screwing around with the H100i mounting onto the motherboard and unfortunately I fell victim to the bracket needing washers issue. Well, I was able to get the H100i mounted to the cpu by using nuts as washers (don't worry, I put plastic spacers above them so they did not touch the mobo). Thankfully I work at a hardware store and had to go to work in 10 minutes - just picked up a few screws there:

There. Problem solved. That was painful. Buuuuut it has proved well worth it. 2 cores like to idle around 20-22, the other 2 at about 25. Probably could fix it with a remount if I wanted too, but I don't have any extra TIM and I'm okay with that small of a temperature gap. Now... this is about to get very messy:

At this point I stopped taking pictures as I was waiting on a FrozenCPU order with the proper cables. I also picked up a ramsink from them, so I can change the orange ram to black... but the keyword is "a." I only picked up one :Doh! I might order another one, I might not. Not sure... Anyways, let's tidy those cables:

AND WE'RE DONE!! 2 Months in the making, it's finally come to an end. I wish I had the camera to show this build off properly, my phone's camera may be pretty good, but not nearly good enough to really show how cool this thing looks! Never the less, here are pictures I took of the final build, playing with light settings, etc:

Arg she blows! The black and red themed build is over! Unfortunately I was unable to obtain my GPU backplate in time, as Trip TCC is on a well needed break.. I'll just have to be patient biggrin.gif
As for the paint and exterior logos... well I wanted to also get those from Trip in the form of case badges, so those will have to wait as well. BUT there is one last thing, one thing needed to top this all off: Rainmeter.

I have to give serious credit to the author of the Lara Croft picture: Valentina Remenar
She has some seriously cool art, and if she offered, I would buy this picture as a print in a heartbeat. Unfortunately due to some serious jerks stealing and re uploading her art, she has resorted to uploading in lower resolutions only. So to fix this and make a good wallpaper, I took some time in photoshop to make a border thumb.gif Also, that axe icon on the right - it opens a folder on click that contains all the items I normally put on my dekstop. I want to keep the screen as clean as possible now biggrin.gif

Here's her page, check it out! http://tincek-marincek.deviantart.com/

And with that - A Survivor is born
