AMD FX-6300, FX-8320 or i5-3350P

Hey guys,

I've been thinking for like 2-3 months about this, I've got opinions from other people and also did a lot of search on Google but I still want more opinions tongue.gif

So, I gotta choose between these 4 options:

Option 1:

Motherboard: MSI B75MA-P45 (62€)
Processor: Intel Core i5-3350P (165€)
Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon HD7870 GHz Edition (189,90€)

Option 2:

Motherboard: Unknown yet
Processor: AMD FX-6300 (134€)
Graphics card: Either same GPU and add a good cooler to OC the hell out of that CPU and a better board or try a better GPU, what would you choose (even if you don't choose option 2, I'd appreciate if someone told me what would they choose)

Option 3:

Motherboard: Unknown yet
Processor: AMD FX-8320(165,90€)
Graphics card: Some not-as-expensive-as-that-HD7870 since decent boards for AMD FX CPUs cost more than 70€

Option 4:

Since Intel Haswell is going to be released in May and I'LL BUY IN START OF SUMMER (sorry if you thought I was shouting, I'm not, I just wanna be sure you read this part), should I get a better CPU with the price decrease of the Haswell release? I know in summer prices will be much different, but if I get an opinion now, it will be easy to choose later.

The computer will be principally for gaming AND programming ( game engine programming ), little 3D modelling, image & movie editing ( still beggining in image and movie editing ).

Thank you for reading this smile.gif

I'm interested in why you picked the i5-3350p for your Intel selection. It's the one Core i5 chip that lacks Quick Sync, which accelerates video encoding and decoding. I'm sure it's a few Euros cheaper than even the i5-3450, but if you're doing video editing it ought to be worth the price differential.

Also, don't expect prices on Intel's Ivy Bridge chips to drop once Haswell hits the market. Intel knows that they're the undisputed king of CPUs, so they don't feel the need to drop prices on old stock. Sandy Bridge chips didn't drop when Ivy Bridge came out, I expect the same pattern this time.

I choosed i5-3350P because it was the only thing I could decrease to get the HD7870 GHz Edition, otherwise I'd need to go with a Sapphire HD7850 2GB.

Actually, I didn't see that i5-3350P didn't have QuickSync. Now, I'm even more confused in what to choose for my little budget.

If it's for gaming I'd get a 6300 and bump up to a 7870 XT from the GHz. If you're going to be doing anything that can really take advantage of the extra cores (ie rendering, encoding) then the 8320 is much better. At stock the i5 will beat both of them in gaming and will be equal to or slightly better than the 6300 in stuff like rendering and encoding but will be crushed by the 8320. If you plan to overclock, which the 3350P can't do, there's no question about what route you should take.

You don't need an expensive board for the FX if you're not overclocking. The i5-3350P can't overclock, nor can any chip using the B75 chipset. So any AM3+ board that fits your needs and isn't explosion-tier (read: MSI) would be fine in that case. If you want to OC on AMD I'd recommend a GA-990FXA-UD3 or M5A97 EVO minimum.

Well, if I choose the FX-6300, I'll for sure try to get some space for a cooler to OC it, the only prob is that the case I'm getting doesn't have enough space ( it's a Nox Zen, very cheap, had to cut in that to increase other things ). Also, if I choose FX 8320, I won't be able to get any higher GPU and it'd cost more since only 780-785 chipset boards cost 60-70€ and I don't like these very cheap boards, it doesn't make me feel very secure. I'd not be able to buy a cooler for the CPU either ( I'd not OC with a 780-785 chipset board anyway ).

If you're concerned about space you could probably find a second-hand H50 closed-loop liquid cooler for around 30EUR. Again, if you're mostly doing gaming, multimedia, and stuff like that the 6300 is more than adequate.

So, you guys are saying that for what I do the FX-6300 + HD7870 GHz 2GB will be better ( probably will change GPU to a better one since in Summer prices will be lower for sure ).

Another thing I'd like to know is which board would you recommend me ( for max 80€ ), if there's any good for that price for OCing (if you say the FX 6300 will be better, of course).

for overclocking: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4417#ov
it has 8+2 phases and cooled vrms.
for else get: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4395#ov for 8320
or even http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4385#ov for 6300

prices are:

70 for DS3 - 6300
84 for D3 - 8320
99 for UD3 - OC

personally i would get UD3 if you go 8320 route cos you can squeeze a lot of MHz from that chip with that board. You will get from that 15-20$ much greater value overall.

with 6300 i guess D3 would be ok for normal OC on stock voltages. You could get a decent bump depending on your chip. Just dont expext that you can crank up voltage too high because of lacking cooling on vrms.

PS: you dont need 990 chipset as long as you will have only 1GPU. 970chipset is everything you need.

The stores where I'll buy the PC don't have the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 and the others only have 4+1 PPDs :s
