Critique this HTPC Build for me please......

Thread Starter
as I'm about to pull the trigger on most components.

Case: Fractal Design Node 304 -- $90 w/ $15 shipping
Processor: AMD A8-5500 -- $105 free shipping
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A85X-ITX -- $100 w/ $7 shipping
HDD's: Toshiba PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM SATA III -- 3 of them to start, $90 each = $270 w/ $8 shipping
Memory: G.Skill Sniper 8gb DDR3-1866 -- $58 free shipping
PCU: Undecided. Know I want a fully modular PSU given the case.
OS Drive: Undecided. Will be a 64gb Sata III SSD, I know that much.
Input device: Logitech DeNovo Edge keyboard (picked up for a whopping $65 on Craigslist just a few days ago)

DO NOT want a graphics card. Want to stay integrated. This is going to be a storage based, web browsing, and streaming HTPC only utilizing either unRaid or FlexRaid (hence the 3 drives, one for parity). Wanting to stick with the software raid so I can have some parity coverage in case of failure as well as being able to pool and add drives to the RAID without rebuilding everytime. The HTPC will be attached to my home network via hardline so I can do my encoding from my main computer and then move them over to the HTPC easily once done. It will see some internet browsing and streaming (netflix, amazon instant video, etc), but certainly ZERO gaming. Undecided on interface too, though XMBC is high on the list.

I decided on the case because I like the design, size, and fact that it has space for 6 hard drives. The rest of the components were chosen based on price, capability, reviews, etc.

Thoguhts, changes, recommendations? Really all I'm looking for is funcationality, the ability to turn it on and have a nice interface that's easy to navigate to my stored movies, or hit the web and browse or stream. I'd rather it feel more like an A/V component than a PC, but need the PC functionality so I can get through my network with it too.

Looks fine to me. Id prefer seagate or WD HDDs myself. In terms of M-ITX their are more CPU/Mobo options using Intel CPUs without a massive price difference.

For PSU Seasonic and Corsair make decent modular options like;

RAID 5 is absolutely pointless by the way! all it will do is tell you if you've lost some data, it can't recover it. Get one extra for RAID 01 (or 10) for a striped, mirrored array or don't bother. Not bothering with RAID would have my vote... really not worth the hassle and for what you've said you want it for, I can't see the point!

You sure you can add drives to expand the RAID on the fly? I'm no expert so if you know something I don't I'd love to hear about it!

Defo go with XBMC and for smooth 24 and 23.967 Hz playback I seriously suggest a nVidia GPU... something basic like a passive GT 610 would be plenty http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GT610SL1GD3L/

I made one slight change. I stepped down to the A6-5400K becuase Newegg had it on special with an extra $10 off and free shipping. Can't say no to that for $65. don't really need more than the dual core because the computer won't be doing any transcoding or anything.

Ordered everything I had linked. So all I'm left needing is a SSD, OS, PSU, XBMC, and either unraid or flexraid, and that should be about it.

For the PSU, I'm thinking of this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703034

Because it's modular other than the main power connector, which for me is a plus because I'll only need a single molex with splitter, and 3 SATA power connectors to start and it comes with six. Good wattage range, decent price, highly regarded manufacturer IMO.

unRaid and FlexRaid are both software based raid utilities that do all of the above with parity and recovery, drive pooling, etc. FlexRaid seems to be more of a fit for me but unRaid I'm seeing as being more stable and better for data recovery if you lose a drive. I want to stay away from the standard hardware or integraded mobo raid because every time you add a drive you've got to rebuild the entire array.

And what gives with RAID 5 not being able to recover? It's a parity based RAID, so you should be able to recover in the event of a drive loss. Two drives and you've got issues, but one drive loss should be completely recoverable.

Not going with a graphics card. Don't (think I'll) need it. Will address after it's all said and done.

I personally would change to a G555 Celeron CPU. That is what I has running in my NAS server. I use it to stream media all the time as well...I think it is 55 bucks on newegg. I dont think quad cores are really needed for a NAS/HTPC server. Plus it also has integrated graphics so that solves that issue as well.

I'll admit it's been about 5 years since I had a RAID in any of my systems and that was from my memory.... read up a bit more and yes, it provides data integrity! My bad! However it will be slower than a stripped array because it has to write the parity information. I thought it used two drives to stripe the data and another for the parity... which would have been fairly useless!

Just for future reference, if you want to use the drives as normal again after, you may have to use the same program to undo the information it puts onto the drive to identify it as a RAID drive.... I had a RAID built using my motherboards controller, took the drives out to put in a new machine and it wouldn't see it at all... couldn't format it, couldn't fdisk it, nothing until I put it back in the board and removed the RAID info!

What OS are you thinking for it?

That's the cool thing about FlexRaid. You can remove a drive, and drop it in another computer, totally readable and usable. Not worried about the write speeds because after I transfer in the 1.5 TB or so of movies, it'll just be onesies/twosies being transferred in as I get and encode them.

Probably going to be Windows 7 Home 64Bit. I have an old unlimited license copy of XP Pro, but it's 32 bit. Suppose I could use it for the interim, but I'd rather get all the computers in the house on the same basic OS. Just don't want to pay $120 for it.

If openelec had raid support, I'd go that route. I'd be half tempted to try a Linux based build and run XMBC and FlexRaid on that, but I've never done Linux before (except a Ubuntu bootable CD that I use for data recovery on the off chance my main computer boot files get corrupted, it's happened) and am not sure how well a linux box would integrate in to my network with the rest of the PC's being on windows.

Well, linux is free so it wouldn't cost much to try except your time... Probably lots of time! However there are many compatible file sharing systems you can use between Linux and windows, samba, nfs or just good old FTP would be the top 3 to look at. You used to be able to set a 'webfolder' in Internet explorer which could point to a FTP server, that facility may still be around.

Oh, and with 7, you can install it without a key and asides from bugging you every so often about being the victim of software counterfeiting and turning your desktop background black it works exactly as before!
