Yes, but any savvy gamer understands that those numbers are heavily skewed by the massive supply shortages the PS3 (and somewhat, the 360) suffered.

Also, I'm guessing those figures are only for the 3rd month, as the 360 had sold roughly 1.5 million by 40 days post launch, and the PS3 had sold about 1.6 million by 50 days post launch.

Well the source appears to claim that those figures are cumulative for the three month period, so either you are very wrong or they are!

If they are very wrong then surely we can write off their guess as to how many Wii Us sold in January rendering the whole thread pointless?!

Since this builds upon the Wii's success, it is safe to assume that once the Christmas season dies down, so will the sales. The magic that the Wii had is no longer there, so sales are going to slump. No surprise here.

I'm sure once they get around to a few must-have titles and things get past winter that it'll pick up. Some consoles start out slow and gain traction, some start off fast and lose it, etc. Could just be people are happy otherwise at the moment. I think it's still too early to say it's failed but just that things are still in a pinch and not as many people are putting out that money for consoles.

Last console I bought from Nintendo was GC. That was only so I could play the very awesome Metroid and RE4. I have never owned a Wii/WiiU. Never played a full game on it. Never will. Not interested. I do have a DSi though.
It launched without the buzz of the Wii, without a piece of innovative software that maintains the hype, isn't selling to the so-called 'hardcore' market that wrote off the Wii seven years prior, is $50-100 more expensive and lacks a system-defining core title that even Nintendo faithful absolutely must have. NSMBU is good, but the 'New' series was not only lackluster to begin with, but has grown stale in many gamers' eyes.

Sales will dip until we see a new Zelda, 3D Mario, Metroid, etc., or even Bayonetta 2, Xenogame 2 and so on.

I doubt it. The Dreamcast was just the latest in a string of commercial failures that left Sega with no other option, who now faced not only Nintendo, but new competition from Sony as well. Nintendo didn't fare well with the N64 or GameCube, but were backed by highly successful handheld lines until the Wii turned things around on the home console front. The Wii U could be another GameCube and they'd still probably be in a better position than Sega was.

That's not even taking into account how much stronger Nintendo's brands are than Sega's as they transformed into a third-party publisher.

I didn't even know the Wii U was out until my friend got one, Nintendo has had horrible marketing since the DS Lite

They launched a year to early and this is what happens. It is back firing big time and Nintendo is in panic mode. Idiots. They risked this knowing full well and relied on the brand itself to push sales no matter what. Was it really worth it just to get a year early jump on MS and Sony? Also. They got lucky on the Wii. People are not being fooled this time around. Next will be 3rd party publishers backing out left and right. They need sales. This console is not providing that. Cant rely on Zelda and Mario forever to move systems. They need to stop that and come up with new stuff.

People are holding off to what microsoft and sony has to offer since they are going to be a similar price point. they really need to cut their price of their console. Otherwise, they'll perish and get trampled by Sony and Microsoft.

Wii was for kids. This isn't. Nuf said. Parents won't buy something their kids won't or can't figure out. They messed with their formula, and tried to cater to an audience already taken up by the xb360 and ps3. Plus, all that extra stuff is gimmicky.
