[Ars] Wii U has historically bad January, sells about 50,000 units in US - Page 6

Most people don't understand what the Wii U is even about. Talked to a few people the other day about that. They need some better PR on the system. Alot of the Wii's appeal is the ease of controls/use that old and young were on middle ground. The new Wii U pad adds complicated controls back.

The other obvious things are the price, lack of games, no transferable accounts.

Even from the NES days and the lockout chip they have been alienating 3rd parties in one way or another. The Wii was a step in the right direction but they still need better 3rd party games to come along.

I like the Wii, alot of good games! I own like 30 or so games with alot of the more underrated classics. I'm currently looking forward to Pandora's Tower on the Wii.

I'm older and not all about the annual FPS murder simulators. I draw more towards racing, action, and adventure games.

The Wii U is stronger than current consoles but not that much. The developer Criterion had a very interesting interview about their game Need for Speed most wanted. Here's a quote from that interview.
Quote:
When they first looked at the specs on paper a lot of developers said, 'Well, you know this is a bit lightweight' and they walked away. I think a lot of people have been premature about it in a lot of ways because while it is a lower clock-speed, it punches above its weight in a lot of other areas.
You can read the interview here, it's a good read.

Oh and Nintendo isn't the only company that rehashes their games, Sony also does it. Nintendo made plenty of new ip's this gen.

The WiiU doesn't sell in the millions because

1) Not enough 1st party launch titles, nor big 3rd parties (Ninja Gaiden I'm looking at you). This makes fans like myself hold on until more titles launch before buying the system.
2) Economic situation.
3) It's a Nintendo console, and most 14 year olds are crazy about shooting stuff and killing virtual russians.

On people's wallets. But it has since... 2008. So much that it has displaced money.

Give it a year, it will pick up. Nintendo is showing amazing support for the 3ds. So hopefully they will for the WIiU.

I think I'm going to revisit this thread in 5 years and just post a "I told you so" when it's sales end up being perfectly fine and match if not surpass both that of 720 / ps4.

Literally all Nintendo needs to do is drop the price and release a few 1st party titles right after the launch of the ps4/720. Let the ps4/720 have their 1st day buyer thunder and then wallop them with the megaton of games and a much cheaper console.

I really don't see this system going for more then $250 for the premium model in a year or so. Nintendo's got the bank to take a loss on hardware sales for years and be perfectly fine. They've been in business since the 1800's people, they aren't that foolish.

And thankfully, atleast they still seem to have not lost sight of what a console is supposed to be, a gaming device. It's unfortunate that 720 / ps4 have more or less become home entertainment boxes with games on the side (in all fairness, the 720 more so then the ps4 but the point is the same).

My Wii U has been collecting dust. I have Nintendo Land, Black Ops 2, and Super Marios Bros. It is a fun system but definitely needs better 1st and 3rd party titles. I heard that Nintendo made some promises to enhance the console with new exclusives and software updates, but I am so busy these days I'm not sure if I want to wait it out. One thing I do like is that if you contact Nintendo they always write a personalized message back (non-automated) that explains why a feature is not in the system yet. I would like to see the ability to stream content over my home network to the console rather than just rely on streaming services. Could they push out a firmware update to up the clockspeed on the CPU?

Doesn't matter what it's sales are compared to the others. What investors will judge it on is performance vs the original.

And that comparison will mean the Wii U will not be a success.

The original Wii didn't sell because it was revolutionary, it sold because it was simple to use. So many people I know who aren't even close to being a gamer bought a Wii. They won't be buying a Wii U.
