Is your friend going to overclock? The RAM is a bit too much imho...

I wasn't sure, ram is so cheap nowadays and I hadn't seen timings that low since the 3x 2GB kits for the 1366 series.

Maybe I'll try to save money there and upgrade to a higher end GPU

anyone have any suggestions for ram with reasonable timings?

I do agree with you, however it's the only motherboard with a 5 year warranty that I could find.

with money you can save on cheaper but still quality boards you can add something like a 2 Year Replacement Extended Service Plan which what $5 - $10 bucks

I'd get a 1TB storage drive for the same price. 500gb is too small for a storage drive that you want to last.

You need to find a board that will last, not a board with 5 years warranty. Even if you have 5 years warranty, you don't want to keep on tearing down your PC and RMAing the board, and ASUS HAVE A VERY GOOD RMA SERVICE.

Everything I read said it was a very reliable board that lasts a while. is that all just marketing? or am I good with the sabertooth. or should I look elsewhere?

I'd get a different brand GPU.

XFX's are known to have many problems. I'd rather recommend something like a Sapphire card, or even ASUS for it's cooling for this build.

If you want the best support and overall best brand card though, I'd get a NVIDIA card made by EVGA. I think most people will agree, hands down, that EVGA is one of the best, if not the best GPU making brands for support and components.

Lol! Asus is a nightmare to RMA with. OP you can make this build with quality parts for less that 1,200.

Ditch the XFX card

Cut your motherboard cost in half, get some 2133 gskill ddr for less than half, get her a diamond 7950/70(five year warranty) and a 256gb ssd which is only $150. Grab a $60-70 dollar refurb 1.5tb Seagate drive from newegg (five year warranty) and get her K cpu for cookie cutter oc.
