I used this little program the other day to recover a bunch of files. It's free and simple.

This is the difference:
1) If your files have been deleted : Recuva will pick it up and give you the option of recovery
2)If your files are just hidden/invisible, they still take up allocated space : It means they aren't deleted, therefore recuva will not pick it up. This may be due to a broken MFT or a virus.

Chkdisk check for drive/sector integrity and recovery, recuva is only 'deleted data recovery'

Were you able to check the disk on a linux computer?

I quoted their website. It is not neccessary for you to run chkdisk. It cannot repair the master file table. Anyway, let it complete. Then run testdisk as per the instructions in my last post.

its taking ages, since its a laptop apparently leaving it alone turns off the hard disk or something. will testdisk repair it?

You can use TestDisk to restore files without repairing the MFT. Just follow these steps to find your files, and then copy the files to another location. After you have recovered your missing files you can reformat the drive and then run chkdsk to attempt to repair any bad sectors on the drive. I have used TestDisk to restore files from many corrupted drives both internal/external hdds and flash drives.

Run TestDisk for File Recovery:
Step 1: You can create a new log file or not. I would just choose No Log (Click to show)
Step 2: Select the drive with the files you are trying to recover. (Click to show)
Step 3: Select the Intel/PC partition. (Click to show)
Step 4: Select Analyse. (Click to show)
Step 5: Select Quick Search. (Click to show)
Step 6: Highlight the partition where the files are located and press P. (Click to show)
Step 7: Following the on-screen instructions either select a single file with :, or select all files with a. (Click to show)

You will then press shift+c to copy the files. After copying the files, use the arrow keys to navigate to the location you are going to save the files and press c. Your files have now been copied to that location.

After verifying that all of your files are intact. You can reformat the drive, and if it is in good health you can continue to use it.

With the current low price of storage I would just replace a drive that has intermittent failures.wink.gif

The length of time to copy the files can vary greatly depending on how the drive is connected to the computer, e.g. USB 2.0/3.0, SATA II/III, and how large the files are.
