Your friends are idiots. Updates don't "make your PC slow". Updates primarily protect you against known security vulnerabilities.
I work IT and not installing your Windows updates is one great way to increase your chances of getting infected with malware. Do you want malware? No? Then do your freaking updates.
Also, tell your friends to stop giving out IT advice, they are bad at it.

Every other day? Did you just install Windows 7 recently? A fresh install usually has a lot of updates to download but then Windows updates only happen the 2nd Tuesday of every month, its called patch Tuesday.
Or are you referring to other updates, like Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader, and Java? Because you should do those updates as well. Also, most Windows updates overwrite existing Windows files and don't take up more space on your hard drive.Edited by Mygaffer - 2/16/13 at 12:45am
