[computerbase] Test: 17 Graphics Card Review: New frame latency charts

Quote:
Recently we updated our graphics test track in August last year and it changed the hardware: So we continued from there on Intel's Ivy Bridge CPU, which is not only more power, but also the new PCIe 3.0 standard supports . Because the platform is currently continue, this time were the driver and the selection of games on top of updating our graphics test track.

In addition to the AMD Catalyst 13.2 beta 4 is now available for use of Nvidia GeForce 313.96. At the games had some no longer current or technically uninteresting title five new soft. "Medal of Honor: Warfighter": A new "Battlefield 3," "Far Cry 3", "Hitman Absolution" are, and the free-2-play game "Planetside 2". For Skyrim, we also installed some graphics mods, among other things, improve the textures, the water and the vegetation plot to raise the demands on the graphics card.

Moreover, we have from now on the new "3DMark" as used in synthetic benchmark that everyone can run the free version (for the most part). We tested 18 different 3D applications, two more than the old test track. In addition to the test track in the coming weeks not less up to date, "Battlefield 3" will hold a collection availability.

With this article we introduce also a new variant to represent the performance of the graphics card.. The so-called "frame latency diagrams" represent a new approach to establish a performance, but more on that later.
In tests without anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering we do in the future at the resolutions 2560 × 1600 and 5760 × 1080.
Through the updates, changes and enhancements we have improved the information content of our graphics tests. For praise, suggestions and of course criticism to these innovations are welcomed in the comments to this article.

If their frame latency testing is correct, AMD has a hell of a lot of work to do.

For those who find Far Cry 3 stutters, their chart confirms it. It seems Nvidia has tamed it quite a bit with the last driver.

wow the 7970 Ghz (and a handfull of 7XXX series cards) is ahead of the whole 6XX series in all those compute tests. wow.though i guess the reference card runs hotter and louder fan noise...my card is nowhere near those temps

That's for sure, they only added fixes on a few DirectX 9 games as of now.

I wonder why they did use GeFore 313.96 but not Catalyst 13.2 Beta 5, which has performance fixes for Far Cry 3 (and Crysis 3 too).

Beta 5 most likely wasn't out when he started the article. It would not have mattered anyway as the only FC3 improvement was 10% fps @ 2560x1600.

I didn't expect a reference 7970 GHz to be 74% louder than a GTX 680.

Now that's a proper review thanks for sharing.

Yeah this has been known for a while, it might have something to do with Nvidia gimping the compute on Geforce cards, I don't know if AMD do the same with their HD line? Wish the software I used was OpenCL instead of CUDA, wouldn't bat an eye in getting a couple 7970s as compute cards.

10% looks worthwhile to me. smile.gif

I don't think they apply only with 2560x1600, it's just how they tested it... I would be wrong here through.

I wish people would stop talking about "compute" in general. It's almost as comparing flops numbers just for the heck of it.

If you really need the performance in a GPU accelerated software you'll be much better off by looking at the individual software and the performance of different cards in that. NV obviously wins everything with CUDA but even on top of that depending on the type of loads the performance numbers are hardly consistent like they would be with gaming.
