New 3TB hard drive not detected

Didn't know how to word the title, so I'll correct it here. It does get detected in bios, but only sometimes. Sometimes it'll be detected in bios after I unplug and plug the sata cable back in and everything is fine at that point, but if I start to transfer a huge folder (240GB), it'll "disconnect" itself from the computer after 10 minutes. After that, it'll stop being detected in bios. I never hear any clicking sounds and the hard drive doesn't make any noise at all. Power is running to it because I can feel it vibrating and spinning when the computer is on. I tried everything I could think of except use a sata 2 cable instead of the sata 3 cable, but I don't think that would make much of a difference. frown.gif

HDD is the Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001.

Sounds like a windows compatibility issue. Try installing intel storage drivers. This should fix it. http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/chpsts/imsm

Yeah, the status in that program says everything is okay. I look in event viewer and I see a bunch of Event IDs 51 and 57.

Is this a new install?

Have you checked drive in Windows Computer Mangement?

How did you format MBR or GPT?

Have you tried different Sata Ports

Those error codes sound like a problem with the drive itself. I had a barracuda drive and it was faulty out of the box. I also know many other people with the same problem. When i was shopping for a new drive I came across a review of the ST3000DM001 and it said there are a few versions of the barracuda with varying quality, all packaged exactly the same. So essentially the packaging and price is the same but the drive is cheaper quality than it should be depending on the drive you happened to get. I would say to pay a little more and get a western digital. It will be less of a gamble as there would only be one place of manufacture. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help :/

I didn't notice this until after I got the drive and was really hoping that wouldn't be the case with this one. frown.gif
I thought about doing a new windows install but that wouldn't help, would it? Windows 7 64bit btw.
