Weird overclocking experience.

I used AMD's Vision Engine program to overclock my 6850 GPU from 700 MHZ to 800 MHZ and I increased the memory clocked a little (not too much at all) the other day. It worked fine for about 2 days and then when I was playing Borderlands 2 last night, the right half of the screen went to the left and the left half of the screen went to the right. I thought it was the game but then I went back to the desktop and it was still like that, so I reduced the overclock by about half on both sliders. I rebooted and everything is fine now.

I have never overclocked before and I read up on how to overclock a GPU. I don't have any friends who know computers to help me learn this stuff so I am kind of on my own here (except I do have the awesome Overclock.net community!). I decided to give it a shot and overclock this GPU a small bit just to make sure I could do it and it would work. But unfortunately it didn't. Now I know what you are thinking. "This guy is an idiot, he did everything wrong, blah blah blah." But I did read how to do it and I used AMD's built in overclocker software to do it.

Right now, the GPU clock is running at 645 MHZ and the memory clock is 1000 MHZ. I overclocked the GPU clock a tiny bit just to see if it will remain stable. Without being too harsh on me, what should I have done and how should I overclock this thing so I can get it back to between 700-800 MHZ? And is there a way to overclock the memory of the card? I would like it at 1024 MHZ just to see if it will remain stable. I have furmark and I tested it with that and I got 22 FPS with 2x AA on with this setting I have.

Also, have any of you had any weird experiences overclocking a GPU? Like did it crap out on you and make the screen give you the middle finger or something?

Use the MSI Afterburner or Sapphire Trixx or the Asus GPU Tweak. These are my trusted softwares. Whenever overclocking up the core 25Mhz at a time, then bench it for 1/2-1 Hr. If it crashes, bump up the voltage by .05v. Thats how i do. Also, if you use either of the software, you might have to check the option of unlocking the voltage .
