Switching hardware, how to configure windows to new hardware (motherboard).

Thread Starter
I recently have bought a new Evga z77 motherboard and kept my old HDD. It seems windows is not configured to the new hardware and cannot start (it blue screens after it tries starting for a few seconds).

I downloaded a repair iso and booted from a usb and the repair tool could do nothing.

I think I can image my HDD, save it to a usb, reinstall windows from the repair utility, then reload the HDD from the image?

But wont the image have the windows config for the old hardware?

How can a I save my data and just set it up for the new hardware?

You will need to reinstall windows after motherboard upgrade...
Either reinstall windows to another drive if you have one or back up current files/photos/music to external drive.

try changing the sata mode.

i personally recommend backing up and cleanly formatting. obviously the jump from one board to another was too big of a change with drivers considered. the best way is to just back up your old drive and format, or install windows cleanly onto a new drive and use gparted to make sure the old drive is NOT bootable.

Try to kill off some drivers from safe mode, it might help. You may also need to install some fresh ones for storage.
This might help if it's an AHCI problem...
