looking to upgrade

Thread Starter
Hello I am in the market to upgrade one or two pieces in my system in my sig. But I am not sure what to upgrade (will do a complete upgrade in summer) I was considering my cpu and motherboard, but i don't want to bottleneck my gpu. It is a very hard decision since my pc is very balanced in my opinion. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated. Also this will mainly be a gaming pc, budget is about $250-300.

I'm not 100% sure if your mother board supports it but you could swap out that duo for a Quad like a top range yorkfield. Assuming you can get one reasonably cheap say $50 you could then spend the rest on a 7870. That should give you a very nice boost in performance.

Edit: I actually looked around and if I'm reading this right the 780i chip with the proper bios update should be good for up to a QX9650.

I've looked around and I have found a q9550 for $115, and I've found 2 qx9650's for $200 and $215. For the 100 dollar price difference how much performance gain does the 9650 put out?

Thous are just way way WAY over priced. Do not pay that kind of money. For $115 you should at least get the hole q9550 x mobo + ram not just the CPU. Like I said $50 is reasonable if not a bit much for a q9550. I mean for $229.99 you can pick up a brand spanking new 3570k and that will cream any and all C2Q.

Funny I was planning on upgrading to the 3570k (or the haswell equivalent if its better) in the summer. So I should be looking for $50 for the 9650, if you don't mind i'd like some help finding one for this price I haven't seen a single under $100.

Well I suppose its possible that second hand q9xxx's are more expensive in the states though $100 just sounds like way more then its worth. We have a saying here in Finland that roughly translates to "The stupid one is not the one who asks, but he one who is willing to pay". If 5-6 year old CPU's are still selling for that price then I guess the sellers have no reason to go cheaper.

Even so there are not that many q9650's around as it was the top of the line C2Q costing ~$500. The q9550 is much more plentiful as it only cost half that and was almost as fast. That being said if you intended to go for a 3570k later this year the the point of hunting down a C2Q is kinda moot. You might as well just get a new graphics card like a 7850 or a 7950 and roll with the E8400.

Sure the E8400 will bottleneck the new GPU to some extent but its not like you wont see a huge leap in FPS regardless. CPU bottlenecking mostly shaves of top end FPS anyway (though in some extreme cases particle effects and physics can make slow CPU's bog down) and with a powerful GPU you can ramp up gpu bound stuff like AA, AF, resolution that sorta thing. While on the subject. Any plans to move up to 1080p form that 20"?

what about the ASRock FM2A55M-DSG ( its a FM2 board) for $45 at newegg, and a AMD A8-5600k ( 3.6 ghz quad core ) for $104 at amazon, should be able to overclock to 4.0 ghz and plenty good for gaming, just a little bit under a 3570k and a Z77, but much cheaper
EDIT: if you need a gpu il sell you a 550ti for $50
EDIT2: Go NZXT ( op, and bit reaper )

Yes i had planned to move to 1080 or maybe even higher in the future as higher resolutions monitors are starting to become more common and cheaper. I thought about upping to a 7870 for now and bumping up to a 7950 later in the summer when i sell this current pc. One problem I have though is that my current pc runs my 260 at 50C at idle so I'm not sure if this is a problem with the older card or the case itself (which is ungodly loud nearly 65 db constant).

EDIT: the 50c is the idle temp

Not sure what you mean by NZXT care to elaborate please? Also I would consider going amd for now and upgrading to the 3570k later. I may take you up on that offer for the 550ti.

It shouldn't get that hot being that loud in that case, i have the same exact case and my 550ti is almost silent for gaming and it stays cool
EDIT: do you have precision x or afterburner?
