MEMTEST showing tons of errors, did OC do this?

Thread Starter
Today I got a 16GB corsair vengeance 1866mhz to replace my 8GB corsair vengeance 1866mhz. I stuck them in and booted into windows.
I recently got a stable OC of 4.8 cpu and 2100Mhz ram with my 8GB kit so i figured I'd give it a try with my new 16gb kit. I booted into windows and ran cinebench, unigine valley, just a few little things here and there. I got a blue screen and bumped my vcore up a notch based on the bsod code. Then booted into windows fine again. I was just on OCN and I got a bsod. Error indicated a memory failure. So I ran memtest and less than half way through the first pass I get this:

Currently it is showing 11 errors. (Appears to on one stick)

1st question is: My overclock setting were auto timings, 1.65V, and 2100MHz clock. Could this have caused the memory to give the errors or is this unrelated, and I just got a bad stick? Isn't 1.65V safe for corsair vengeance?

2nd question: RMA time?

You first need to try and run the test on stock setting (no overclock) to make sure it's not faulty hardware. If you continue to still get errors then you most likely will have to RMA (don't forget to try different slots on the motherboard as well). Additionally...some memory kits/modules may not be able to run at its rated settings. If that's that case then you can go ahead RMA unless you're fine with lowering the speed and loosening the timings (I think most people do).

The memory is good if it never gives errors at its stock settings, but nothing beyond that is certain, especially when the memory came overclocked from the factory. I'm guessing its chips aren't rated 1866 MHz but just 1333 MHz by their actual manufacturer.

I'm confused about that screen shot. Why does it say "CAS 1-1-1-3 DDR2" when you're running DDR3 and DDR3 always needs a lot more clocks than that, like a minimum of 7? That makes me think MemTest86+ ver. 4.20 has a bug, although it's never failed for me, except by missing errors.

You may want to try MemTest86 ver. 3.5b (ver. 4.1.0 is buggy with some motherboards) and Gold Memory.

Is it possible the motherboard's CPU voltage regulator can't put out enough power for a reliable 4.8 GHz overclock?

Yeah I was running the test at stock. For 7 ish hours. It came up with 72 errors. I have THIS kit. It was running at 1866 (stock) with everything else at auto. No CPU OC just pretty much everything at stock. I only had the kit in the comp for like maybe half an hour when it BSODed.

RMA, or underclock. Did you change Mobo slot as this can cause errors if you have a bad ram slot.

Good Luck!

Cant change slots due to large heatsink. I guess it time to RMA. I really wish that I could get another Corsair kit. I would like to be able to call them consistently good, but thye have a 50% fail rate with me. I guess I'll try me some Gskill this time around.

I couldn't find a review of 1866 MHz Corsair Vengeance memory, but these 1866 MHz Corsair Dominator Platinums were made with no-name chips:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory/display/corsair-dominator-platinum_4.html#sect0

IOW factory rejects, common for slower speed modules but this is the first time I've seen them in something rated 1866 MHz.

G.Skill is no better, but they're also no worse than the vast majority of retail brands. Better would be Samsung or no-heatsink Crucial, and it's funny that Samsung rated 1600 MHz is made with chips faster than those usually found on other brands of 1866-2133 MHz memory.
