However many here might disagree with me and say that LCD is better. So basically, its really down to user preference. Go into to Harvey Norman, JB, or whoever you are thinking of buying from (or even just to find a few models you like and can research later) and just take a look for yourself. Everyone has different preferences and requirements for what they like/want from a TV.
Sadly if you want to go with plasma you only have two choices these days, Samsung or LG. I've got a 65" LG plasma and its been a more than solid TV. Never had any issues with it, looks fantastic and was pretty well calibrated out of the box. Only had to make some minor adjustments.
I will note that people here will probably suggest a Sony Bravia LED LCD, from personal experience, I think they are rubbish. My brother owned one and no matter what settings we tried the image was always too sharp and the colours were quite dull compared to what we were expecting from a LED backlit TV. But that's not to say all Bravia's are rubbish, just giving you some feedback from a personal experience. He may have just had a faulty unit I'm not sure. All I know is that the Bravia is gone now and a Samsung LED LCD has taken its place which looks MUCH nicer.
But ultimately, go look for yourself, its the easiest way. What suits one person may not suit another.

I went with a Samsung Plasma a few years ago and I LOVE it 600hz and crazy contrast compared to LED (at least at the time I might be a bit out of the loop)
only down side is that Burn in is still a bit of an issue (dont let anyone tell you otherwise) If you play games that have HP bars or even work out videos that have a time bar somewhere it creates burn in after about 30 min (thankfully Samsung has a "wash" feature that has corrected it every time so far for the past 3 years.)
my recommendation is Plasma if your not going to be gaming on it, I love my sammy. If not you could go for LED but if you watch much action 120hz are need or motion blur is horrible.
the BEST thing to do is go down to a Brick and mortar store and look at them take a movie you like with some action in it and look at them...I had a salesman try and sell me a panasonic but wow next to the samsung it looked like crap.
also look at proper settings online before going since some of the cheaper ones can look just as good as the expensive ones with a bit of tweaking the settings
