Opteron dual core vs FX single core???? - Page 2

each board has its own Bios , which will determine which memory dividers you have available. ONe of the nice things about the DFI boards is its vast array of memory dividers. The Epox boards have similar functionality with regard to divider choices, since the newer Bios releases.

lol 165 t oat least 2.2? *****!

At least 2.4....most likely more than 2.6. On a good chip you're lookin at 3.0, and laughing at all the FX ownerrs.

I said 2.2 due to the fact that I'm not familiar with memory dividers and such and I'm not sure about the oc ability of my mem...thought about selling it to grab some ddr500 to give me some head room. I sure wasn't doubting the oc ability of the 165 as I haven't heard of any one not getting 2.5 or so and higher unless some other part of the system stopped them

Well I would take the Dual core Opty over an FX single Core anyday mate.

The Opty 165 is a great CPU as is the 170 with an Easier 10x Multi that may help in thew overclokcing department.

If i was however to also reccomend a MOBO then I would say a DFI as they have an Extensive Overclocking ability.

Dividers are easy. You'll get more than 2.4 no matter what memory you have. Just start out at the lowest divider possible....find your stable settings that way....(overclock the CPU). Then you bring the divider up by 1 and test for stability....and keep bringing it up one until it's unstable. Then you just back off one and test for 8 hours or whatever and you're good.

dfi is good but it can be a pain getting a power supply and ram to work properly with them, ive owned 3 of dfi boards and liked all but one of them however for his situation i would go with what hes thinking of getting, may save him some greif in the future

and dual core definatly, opti165 2.4 easy, even a bad ocing chip generally gets 2.4 no problem, its getting above this that starts messing with bad ocing chips and even most of those can do 2.65 eventually

i liked my fx55 at 3.1 ghz but even at that speed it jsut didnt compare to my opti 170 at 2.8ghz, there was no comparison for what i liked to do

I will Admit with ram it can be Picky However If you get the Right PSU in the first place you should have no issues on that end.

well can the psu I'm running now handle a dfi board?
I've read bad things about my memory with dfi also...I think
Too damned many forums and product reviews to remember

Your Current PSU will be fine with a DFI Motherboard yes.
