Desktop stuck with a black overlay when a game crashes/freezes [windows 8]

For the past few months I have been using windows 8 with little problems, but there is this one problem that is really annoying. Whenever a game crashes/freezes I have no other option than to restart my pc. The problem is that when a game crashes in full screen, I cannot acces the desktop anymore. I can ctrl+alt+delete and acces metro, but when I try to go to the desktop there is this black overlay that doesn't go away. I can see the windows bar in the bottom and when I hover with my mouse over the task manager button, the black overlay does go away and I can see my normal desktop, but the black overlay always comes back and so I cannot close the crashed game from the task manager. The only solution I know is to restart my pc. Is anyone familiar with this problem? I have googled this but I can't find anyone with a similair problem.

This is the normal behavior for a direct x 11 game crash. You can try hitting ctrl+alt+delete selecting task manager then alt+tab to the task manager and use the keyboard to end the program. If you have mouse control in metro you can also LOG OUT and then log back in.

I would work on whatever you OC'd that is not stable. It could be the CPU, RAM, or GPU I would start with the GPU.

I haven't got anything OCed now, and alt+tab doesn't work. It's just like with hovering over the button in the lower bar. As long I have task manager selected in alt+tab and hold down those keys I can see the desktop + task manager, but as soon as I let go of alt+tab the black overlay immediately comes back.

i have a similar problem, except instead of being unable to access the desktop, my desktop background just turns completley black. it also happens whenever i access a win 8 app and then go to the desktop mode, cant solve this.

Well yes, I have that too, I can acces the desktop but it seems that the overlay from the crashed game can not be minimized or closed.
